My boyfriend and I had been talking about adopting at cat when we buy a house sometime within the next year. Last Friday we were in Petsmart buying some stuff for our dogs (2 dachshunds and a terrier foster) and saw Stan through the glass, we didn't bother to go in but both commented on him and then bought our stuff and left. The next day we went back to return some of the things that we had bought but didn't need, we went to the adoption area and actually went in and played with Stanley for a bit and decided that maybe on Thursday after Scraps (our foster dog) left we'd go get him. On Monday we had to go in for something else (good thing we live so close to Petsmart, lol), again went in and played with Stan for a bit. We saw that he was 8 years old then, read his little profile thing and decided that we could bring him home now instead of him having to spend more time in the cage.

The girls at Petsmart were so happy that he was being adopted, apparently he had been there for quite some time. Our ACC is a high kill shelter so I'm not sure how he slipped through being euthanized for as long as he did, especially with the overflow of cats there, but he did.

My boyfriend of course didn't listen to me and let the dogs out with him immediately, everything was fine except for a few swats from Stan. Now, two days later, everything is settling in and everyone tolerates each other. Stan will let the dogs lay with him but won't play, lol. He's very vocal and will "talk" with us, if we go up to him and go "mow" he'll do it back.

I'll try to get some pictures to post soon!

Pictures! We need pictures!

As a shelter volunteer, let me thank you for adopting this guy. I'm sure he's not perfect, and don't be surprised if he has a few habits that you don't like. Any middle-aged man would have them, right?

At any given time, we always have several adult cats who are just fantastic cats, but they are soooooo hard to get adopted.

Good to hear you got Stan. Not enough people think about adopting older kids. Thank you for caring. I hope he enjoys his new home. Can't wait to see pictures.

Thanks everyone!

So far Stan is being a great cat. He doesn't claw or scratch at anything and pretty much just likes to chill on the couch with us or in the bathroom. He only uses his litter box at night (I'm assuming because the dogs are out during the day), and we feed him when we go out and/or at night so that the dogs aren't eating his food or bothering him.

We decided to get an older cat for a couple of reasons - mainly, I don't like kittens, lol. I just don't really have the patience for them. Also, I worked in dog rescue for quite some time so I know, at least with dogs, older, big, and black animals tend to stay there for a long time.

He's quite the talker too, if you look at him and go "mow" then he'll do it back. We were bugging our roommate with it last night, I kept doing it to him while she was trying to watch tv, lol. She really likes him though, if we have everyone out and we're watching a movie, Jess will be laying on one couch with Stanley while Mike and I are on the other couch with the dogs.

Stan swatted at one of the dogs yesterday, but again, it's just my dumb dog. You'd think he'd learn, but nope. Just before he came to us he was bugging his breeder's Maine Coon cat and got a little cut on his forehead that scarred, now he keeps running up to Stan trying to get him to play like he does with Sadie and Stan swats at him and hisses. He hasn't actually hit Fynn yet, but Fynn still yelps and runs away, he usually goes under the bed (that's where he runs and hides when he's in trouble too because he knows we can't get him there).

Little buggers, lol.

Welcome to you, Stan, and the rest of your family (both furred and not). We're glad you found us here at TCS!

Congratulations on your new addition. I used to work at a PetSmart and it was often heartbreaking to see individuals come in to look at the kittens, but pass up the older cats -- especially when they were black cats. And, often, it was these cats that were the most special to me. So, thank you for adopting an older kitty.

Stanley sounds like a sweetheart. I, too, have adopted older kitties (though my current cats were all under the age of 2 when I adopted them). Don't get me wrong, I adore kittens. But, much like you, I don't have the patience for them. When my youngest kit, Finnegan, came to me, I didn't know what to do with his boundless energy. He's about 11 months old now so he has calmed down quite a bit, but those first few months definitely tested my patience. But, enough about me. It sounds like you definitely won the lottery, so to speak, with Stanley. I'm sure, in no time, he'll be friends with your dogs (or at least make your dog one of his minions
) and be settled in. He's a very lucky boy and, I think, you and yours are quite lucky as well.

We will definitely need pics, but thank you for the intro. Again, welcome to TCS. I look forward to "seeing" you around.
