Hi,

Has anyone had ever given acepromazine maleate (Acevet) to their cat? I was told a minimun dosage is required, more than 5mg for the cat to be sedated enough, so he won't panick. Another expert told me the contrary, that is is best to try 5mg first, to make sure it will not harm him. My cat is a six-year old female, weighing 8 pounds 4 ounces.

I want to be careful, my cat is rarely on any medication. I would need this as she throws up in the car...

Thank you for your advice,

Blanche

Yes I have a bit of experience with this drug ...

Please consult the vet who gave you the RX...

I would never give this medicine to my cat, especially for traveling. Cats don't act predictably to sedatives, anything can happen. And Ace in cats is scary, in my opinion

In addition, sedatives make cats feel "strange", which can make them feel vulnerable, it just adds more stress to the stress of traveling. Put a towel in the carrier and if she vomits, clean her up when you stop.

Get some rescue remedy for pets, to help reduce stress.

I am completely against sedating cats for almost any reason, and especially during travel.

Before I knew better I sedated a cat for air travel. It changed his personality, permanently. He went from a jolly social cat to a fearful hate everyone except me cat.

I agree. I would just put a towel in the carrier with the cat. Keep a wet cloth in a plastic bag and clean up when stopped. I am not in favor of giving cats anything they can do without when it comes to medicine.

Ace should be scary in any animal mainly because once given there is no way to reverse the effects.

Nath I would definitely consult the vet who gave you the RX. Ask your vet the good, the bad, and the ugly about Ace so you can understand the drug. If your car ride is short and sweet I wouldn't use it.

As for using Ace as a sedative for long car rides, I'm all for it. My Worm does the trifecta when it comes to bodily fluids on car rides and then clings onto the top of the carrier and screams bloody murder cause he doesn't want to touch his own fluids. The poor cat stresses out and me knowing the cat is stressed, stresses me out cause I hate knowing any animal is uncomfortable I guess I'm ok with sedatives because of being a vet tech and working with them so often.

Good Luck!!!
