My husband and I buy and sell stuff on Ebay, and do a lot of online shopping. We unfortunately live in the worst possible place for that. We live in a small town (about 10 minutes from downtown but our town has less then 300 people) which has a very small post office. When we first moved here, we had a MAJOR issue with the post office. Every time something was delivered, the mail carrier left the item AT OUR MAILBOX which is on the street. We had packages damaged, taken etc. He would not get out of his car and walk the 25ish feet from the mailbox to the house. We called numerous times and complained and he finally started bringing things to the door.
They started doing the carrier pickup thing. For people who don't know what it is, you can get online & pay for/print postage, and set up a request for a carrier to come to your door and take your package and send it out. Seems VERY convenient right?
Two months ago, we were selling some items and lost a few of the printed postage sheets. Once they are paid/printed, you have to repay to print again, and if you print through paypal/ebay, you can't lose them because the seller won't be able to track their purchase.
We found the printed sheets, and set up a carrier pickup for the following day. I should add, we found the sheets a few days later. So when the pickup was done, we had items dated from about 5 days before the pickup. That evening I get a call from the postmaster that says that they will refuse pickup if the date is anything before the scheduled date. I brought up that not only does their website not say that, but I have never heard that before, AND that I do not have a printer at home, so if my husband prints something at work for postage, I cannot send it out til the next day. She said next day is fine but anything other then that is not.
Fast forward to today. Set up a carrier pickup for an envelope and a large package for a friend. I set them out this morning, and went about my day. Items were never picked up. Checked the mail, and found a notice saying pickup was denied due to the date on the items. I check the dates. My husband had printed the envelopes postage on 8-17 but told me he printed it on 8-23 (he knew i would yell at him because I was mad the lady yelled at me for it a couple months ago!) and the large package had a postage date of 8-23-10...which was MONDAY/YESTERDAY. The envelope was not covering the date on the box, it was very clear on the postage.
So I am mad....I am sick of the post office, and my carrier. He could have left the envelope, fine, I would run it to a mail drop. But to not take a package that had a postage date of yesterday, when I was told that it was okay to have the prevoius days date, is just rude/lazy/ i dont even know...

I wrote a little letter to the carrier and postmaster (who apparently has my phone number saved, as she called about thepackage even though i did not leave my number on the carrier pickup...kinda weird) that expresses my displeasure with them not taking this package and listing the date as the reason when I followed the rules for the large package as she herself explained them. I asked that if the rules changed, could I see them in writing as I had never seen a policy about dates, and to refuse this one for being put out the day after postage was printed is ridiculous.
I planned on scheduling a carrier pickup tomorrow, and leaving the note in the mailbox for the mailman and seeing if they pick it up. If not, I was planning on reporting the carrier/postmaster to someone higher up, as I don't think it was right of them.
Should I leave the note or just take the darn thing to a different post office tomorrow? I am mad and wrote the note while mad....it is not rude or anything, just states that I followed all rules on the package, and understand them not taking the envelope but do not understand reasoning behind the package being left. I am just worried that my mail will start getting messed up or something if I make them mad. It is a very small post office, and the postmaster is completely "up in our business" as one time when I called to complain she commented on the amount of packages we send out and recieve...so it isn't like big post offices where they don't know what people send/recieve, she seems to know what we do mail wise!

So sorry for the long post, I needed to get it out. Any advice would be appreciated!

I called in the find out the actual policy and apparently the policy has ALWAYS been that postage has to be paid/printed/date the same day it is picked up. WHICH MAKES NO SENSE. Carrier pickups have to be scheduled the night before by 2am. I don't have a printer at home. My husband works from 5am-2pm and mail delivery is at 11am. I have NO way to print something unless he does at work, so he printed/paid for postage on Monday and now because it is Tuesday, it is too late.....
I asked the woman what people without printers do, are they just screwed out of being able to get carrier pickup? So it is being called something so convenient but it really only is if you are a) able to have a home printer and b)set up pickup the day before but have time in the morning to pay for/print out postage for the package.
Maybe I am being a jerk about this, but I have been able to do carrier pickup for the past year, and have never once put out a package with the same days date, due to not having a printer.
Oh and it doesnt matter that I have been able to do this for a year and it doesn't matter that the postmaster at my post office has told me before that it is okay to have a date of the day before..
I am having a ridiculously bad week and it just keeps getting worse.

I think you have an anal mail carrier! LOL I do click n' ship, too (I have a home business) and mine accept anything. I had one label 3 weeks late and they took it, no problemo.

I agree that you can't mail something with an early date, but I don't see why a late one would matter. After all, the post office itself sometimes "misplaces" packages and they sit and ripen for weeks before being sent on their way!

When you are doing the click n' ship, you can easily change the "mail to" date to a date several days out. Then just coordinate your pickups accordingly. You can also schedule multiple carrier pickups at one time. If I've happened to schedule one ahead and then it doesn't work out, I just put a post it on my mailbox to keep the mail carrier from having to get out of his/her truck.

The best solution, for everyone, would be to get a printer (if at all possible!). My dh quickly tired of doing my postal business so I switched to carrier pickup and have never looked back. It's wonderful.

Hope this helps.

Now they refuse to pick up anything unless it has postage printed the same day as the pickup, so the only option is get a printer. I am actually doing a lot of the mailing out for my husband, and I am so sick of doing it but I am home during the day so its easier for me to take care of it. Well, it was easier.
I think my mail carrier is just po'ed at us because we have reported him so many times. But I am sorry, if you refuse to walk a package I am receiving (that is too large for mailbox) to my door, and instead leave it on street, grass or even hanging from the mailbox, I will call in. I have lost money from his carelessness, and I am sure he is trying to find a way to retaliate, as this has never ever been an issue before. UGH! oh well, I will drive things to the neighboring cities PO myself, and not deal with mine again. (aside from regular mail delivery unfortunately)
Oh and we want to get a printer at some point, but we have 4 cats to get fixed thanks to strays choosing us to find them and us not wanting them to breed, and my daycare business not having as many kids as usual, so i am making less. Unfortunately money is tight, and a printer is not an item we absolutely need, we just liked the convenience of carrier pickup!

Oh honey I'm so sorry. We had issues with our carrier but nothing like you're having. They hang small packages on our flag in a bag and they bring larger ones to the door, and our mailbox to door distance is like, 50 feet. He backs all the up into the driveway. I know it's a tedious job but the woman carrier we had was so anal that once she saw the "No Trespassing" signs we put up for a neighbor issue she refused to deliver packages!! And some of this was for Boo, and Mom gets a lot of packages, and I went to the post office and complained, apparently to the woman carrier herself (oops) and she insisted there was nothing she could do about it. I called the main line for the USPS from the USPS website and Mom sent a letter about what was going on, then I got a phone call from the local post master that said they would begin delivering packages again since they "had received permission to enter the yard". We've lived here for 29 years people, c'mon!

I hope that gets straightened out. Mom would have a royal fit and get the attorney general involved on that one. It is ridiculous that their postage/dating thing is like that. We've never had that problem here but we don't mail out packages often.

Wasn't really a convenience of carrier pick up, sounds like it may cost you more money to go to neighboring PO's to get your stuff sent. That would rub me the wrong way for sure. They raise postage rates every month it seems but they want to do less work for the money we pay. I dunno. It is frustrating for sure.

Yes, it definitely sounds like it's gotten personal with your mail carrier. That really stinks. It's scary to report people like that, too, because you never know if they're going to go postal on you (pun intended.)

Keep your eyes peeled for a free/CHEAP printer on Freecycle or Craig's List. You might find something that will work.

UPS and FEDEX pick up at homes. You might look at that.

Also, I have to periodically tell my carrier to not put packages on the door of the mailbox or on the grass. Next time it happens, I'm going higher up.

If she lives in a remote area, which I assume she does as she has a small postal office, they might charge a convenience fee for that service. I know to send a package to a friend via UPS, they charged me an extra $10 to ship because she was in a rural area.

those are good ideas! Also, ask the moms for whom you provide childcare to keep their eyes out for a free printer - sometimes offices upgrade their equipment and just toss out the old one, even though it's perfectly good (sometimes husbands do the same thing
). Anyway, it costs nothing to ask. Hoping and praying that you get a printer for your home

Wow, that really stinks. I don't see any options other than buying a printer, unless you want to drive to another post office. You can get printers pretty cheap these days, the ink tends to get expensive but if you don't use it to print a lot of photos it shouldn't be too bad.
