I am curious what some of you pay for a typical vet visit. Let's say for example, a first vet visit for an un-neutered cat. What would your initial vet bill cost you?

For example, if I took a new 6 month old kitten into my vet it would cost me for vaccines only $76.00 that would include the initial exam.

If I opted to not get the kitten vaccinated that would cost me $40.00 for the initial exam.

Neuters run $50.00 Spays are $90.00 so overall my visit would be:

with shots and spay-$166.00
with shots and neuter- $126.00
without vaccines it would be a bit cheaper.

I am working on an article in conjunction with another author in Europe- I would appreciate if you answer this post, you give me your city, state or country as we are trying to find out the differences in vet care costs world-wide

Thank you-

I should have saved the quotes my vet gave me for neutering/vacc/fiv testing/leuk testing.
Had I gotten my cat fixed there it would be roughly 250 for everything they said was necessary and 300 for the necessary + recommended. I could not afford it....The same basic thing would cost under 100 at the low cost place.

I take my cats to a low cost place to spay/neuter and vacc. Sorry it makes it long, but I added prices in case anyone wanted to compare.

Cat Packages
Package A

Rabies, FVRCP, Leukemia.
$29.00
Package B
Rabies, FVRCP, Leukemia plus Leukemia test.
$49.00
Package C
All vaccines plus FIV/Leukemia Test.
$56.00
Cat Vaccinations
Rabies (with any surgery)
$8.00
Rabies only
$19.00
FVRCP
$12.00
Leukemia Test
$24.00
FIV/Leukemia Test
$31.00
Cat Neuter
$28.00
Cat Spay
$47.00
*Heat, pregnancy, obesity charges apply

I keep a regular vet for emergencies and some things, but i love the low cost place. When my Joey went in for his neuter, they treated his ear mites at no charge & cleaned his ears and pulled his very loose baby tooth. I had ear mite meds at home for him but I thought it was awesome they cleaned them and put some in his ears before sending him home. And they were very nice.

Queen Eva's initial vet visit 8 weeks old

Feline Leukemia/FIV, Heartworm test.....$34.
1 capstar.................................................6.
Office call/exam......................................30.
free revolution kitten kit............................0.
.5 droncit tab feline.................................. 3.
1 RCCP booster (1st booster)....................13.75
1 fecal exam............................................13.90
Total ......................................................70.65

On September 15 she will have her second RCCP booster, still much too young for rabies.

other fees:

Tolly gets blood work, superchem every 3-4 months, it costs $100

Mazy gets urinalysis/culture once a year the lab cost is $100, the cystocentesis is $36

Standard office visit is $30 recheck is $23

Not sure how much her spay will be, maybe in the $100 range, give or take. I always opt for pre-surgical blood work, so it's a bit more.

Flea meds (frontline advantage revolution) are consistently $5 less than on-line pet supply, they check daily and price accordingly so clients will purchase genuine products

The cost of living where I live is relatively low, including vet fees

Can't answer all your questions because I have always only taken cats that were already neutered or had a neuter/spay agreement through the shelter/rescue. I think fixing is way more expensive than $100 at my vet's though. I am surprised at the price of FIV/FeLV testing, thanks for the info. That is also something I always wanted to know before adoption, I had no idea it was that much.
I live in upstate NY btw.

At the moment (everything goes up EVERY year):

Office visits are $45 - regardless if it's first, routine or emergency
All routine shots are $19.50 per shot plus $3 for hazardous waste
Fecal sample used to be $8 and in one year went to $17! (I think they added another hazardous waste into it but that was a bummer increase)

Anything that is even mildly beyond weighing, looking into eyes/ears is additional (like swabbing ears clean to get a better look is $11), and most of the time vet does not apply first treatment/give pills but tells me how to do it because that would be another charge (eg Revolution application)

Rural western Oklahoma. Cost of living is fairly low here.

Spay under 6 years - $106
Neuter under 6 years - $74
In heat spay - $127

Exams vary in price - $14 - $34
(I’m still not sure how they figure the price on this one)

Rabies vac - $12
Rabies booster - $10
CVR - $9

Revolution, one tube - $8
Fecal - $10-15
Drontal -$12

FIV/FeLv test - $35

Other random charges:

Urinalysis (with sediment exam) - $29
Hospitalize/over night stay - $27
Tranquilizer - $25
Metacam - ~$6 per dose
Clavamox 15ml - $26
Sutures (for wounded cat) - $48
Amoxi - $10
IDEXX fungal serology (blood test) - $76
x-rays - $100
Ear cleaning/analysis - $10-15 (they don't charge for this 98% of the time)

Mix and match...

Average vet visit for anything besides annual check and boosters usually costs over $100. Check ups are around $50. Spay and neuters get no exam charge so it’s just the cost of the procedure and if anything else needs done.
Kitten check ups and shots are harder for me to figure... Last time I took 3 in at one time and it came out to $98 - divide that by three and it still sounds too low.

I do not know what a feline heartworm test costs. I over heard that the dog test costs $30 but they apparently forget to charge people for it?...myself included.

Well I just took Genever to the vet this morning for her rabies shot, and we opted not to do the leukemia shot since she's indoors only (and possibly outdoors soon but only with harness/leash with me).

Long Beach, California (Los Angeles Metro, to give a broader area description)

Office Exam - $48
Rabies Vaccination - $29
Fecal Exam/Lab - $38
Biohazard Fee - $4
Total for today: $119

The office visit/exam went up during the past year from $46 to $48. Once she got a recheck for something and it was only $36. Vaccines are all around $30, and meds vary. Genever was spayed when we got her so I don't know what my vet charges for that. Sorry!

Also, last year Genever had been to the vet for some issue only a month or so before her vaccines were due, so I was able to schedule just a 'vet tech appointment' for the shots, and didn't have to get/pay for another actual exam since the dr. just saw her. Just brought her in, got the shots, and went home.

And, while the SPCA has a deal with the local VCA to get a free initial health exam after adopting a cat or dog, I asked my vet if they would honor that too, and they said yes, they offer free initial exams too if you bring in the adoption papers. Nice!

I don't know very many specifics, but when I took both my girls in early June for the annual check ups, I paid $60 for two exams and one distemper shot. No blood work or anything done on either.

When we took Tumbles in for his last visit, I was only charged $20 for his booster and nothing for an office visit, fecal test, or deworming. (Shocker!) I know that his neuter will be $45 (that's everything including an overnight stay) and his rabies will be $12. He also has one more booster to go and that will be $20 next week.

Exam alone is $27.50. Distemper is about $12, about the same for rabies. Spay is a tid over $100, I think a neuter is just under $100. Bloodwork is $60 for a full panel. FeLV test is $15, I think is't $22 for FeLV/FIV test combined.

Consult - $52.50
Vaccine (3 in 1) - $41.50
Desexing male - $92.50
Desexing female - $185
Microchip - $50

So, a cat needing to be health checked, desexed, vaccinated twice and microchipped would be $278 male or $370 for a female.

My vet's fees vary slightly. If you are an entirely new client, your initial consultation is free. You only pay for your vaccines, fecals, etc. For a litter of kittens for example (like when I took in my three) they charged me one fee ($13 if I remember right) to check all three kittens. They also clumped together their dewormer costs, since none of them needed much.

Neutering cats is anywhere from 50-75 dollars, depending on the size of the cat (basically, how much pain meds and what not they use).

Spaying is a lot more. They advise blood work, IVs, catheters, and extra pain meds be used. So, you can pay anywhere from 100-300 dollars, depending on whether or not you want the extras.

They are also okay with raw feedings. Oh, and if you have a recurring problem (like when I had to deal with mange) my weekly vet visits didn't cost more, we just had to buy meds. The same with kittens, they would have vet techs give every other shots, so that there was no consultation fee, especially since I was going in about every week. (The kittens were staggered in their weight, not everyone was ready at once).

I live in Pensacola, Florida by the way.

The normal vet I use its $35 for the visit alone then with shots its $10 for distemper and $10 for rabies. I dont give any other shots to the cats. I cant tell you about the spaying or neutering because I used a low cost clinic for that but it was roughly $58 (with distemper and rabies shot) for a male and $68 (with both shots) for a female and that was in Enola, Pa thru SNAP of PA

Our vet charges $35 for a routine exam. Doesn't matter how many cats we bring in at one time. The routine exam is $35, whether we bring two cats, three cats, or all six of them. They split that bill among all the cats. Their individual shots, tests, etc., are extra, of course.

I have all the paperwork for our cats at home: rabies shots, spay and neuter, all that good stuff.

I can tell you that Mollipop was a vet kitten; she was born there and I brought her home. Her fee was $25 and that included the cost of her first exam, food, etc. while she was living there with her mom and siblings.

Her first "official" vet visit cost $49, which covered her exam and her first series of kitten shots. Her second visit cost the same and included the first rabies booster. Her third included the second rabies booster and that was the same.

She was spayed in July....we paid $270 total. We paid $50 extra b/c we went with laser surgery for her. $25 was to cover the cost of pain meds for her for five days. We also paid extra for a complete blood test work-up and things like that, so that now we have a baseline for her as she gets older....we did that with all of our cats (but I don't remember how much that cost; it's in the spay bill). The vet had a special in July and we received $30 off the cost of her spay. And since we got her from there, they gave us an extra $20 off the cost, too, for a total of $50 off the cost. She had her stitches removed last week....at no extra cost. And she goes back on Monday for a re-check of the incision....at no extra cost. Those office visits were included in the original cost.

I'm thinking a normal spay, then, would be about $245, if you opt to go with the blood test work-up.

So since she came to live with us, we've paid $442 for our little girl, not including food, litter, treats, Sip, and (lots of) toys.

I'm not sure how much a microchip would cost, but I'll find out because Mollipop will be getting microchipped within the next month or so.

Let's see what I can remember:
Neutering 62€/$79
basic vaccination (cat flu+distemper) approx. 45€/$57
tartar removing including anesthesia approx. 70€/$89
microchip 50€/$63
urine sample and ultra sound of the bladder under anesthesia 90€/$114

Can't remember the FeLV, FIV + bloodgroup test price, it was done at the same time with other stuff so I forgot how much it was.

You will usually get discount if more than one things are done at the same time (except you can't vaccinate a cat during the same day with anesthesia). Will be getting fresh info next week when the cats have their annual shots.

There's no place like home
I've not had anyone speutered for 7 years, so have no idea what my current vet would charge for that. My old vet charged me $25 for a neuter and $35 for a spay. He was country vet and knew that I brought in a lot of cats that simply roamed the neighborhood.

For my current vet:
An annual exam, with all shots (including FeLV vaccine) runs me about $90 per cat, but I get a 15% "quantity" discount from my vet. She charged me $950 to come to my home one time to do the exam/shots for all 10 of my cats. That included 2 doses of antibiotics.

Blood work is either $52 for a screening panel, or $115 for full work up.

I'm from Wellington, NZ and prices are in NZD.

Vet visit - $20
Neuter $50
Spay $90
Vaccinations - there are two compulsary vaccinations and they are $42 each (although I get a breeders discount for that)

If you took a cat/kitten in to get neutered it would be a set $50, no cost for consultation

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Rural NW NJ:

Routine exam only $40
Rabies: $12
Distemper: $12
Normal Neuter: $90
Normal Spay: $110
Revolution: $35 for the 3-month pack

Because of the work we do with ferals and are a "high volume" customer, we have a negotiated rate.
