Kitten "chilling out" in litter box

Madeline, who is 5 months old, has been laying down and chilling out in one of the litter boxes lately. We have 3 boxes, 2 kittens and use Feline Pine. Our kitties are best of friends and we really cannot make much sense out of this or even if we should be concerned.

Madeline was gotten from a rescue shelter (& the shelter got her from another shelter) and shared a cage with other kitties. However, we have had her for about 2 months and this is fairly recent.

Ideas?

And you've never seen her straining to go at all?

Hooded or open box? And what kind of cat toys/furniture do you have around the house? It might be simply solved by scattering a few cardboard boxes around for her to hang out in.

I knew a cat who liked to sleep in the litter box

A few of my fosters do the same thing. I wouldn't be too concerned hun.

They are open boxes but 2 of them are concealed (like, in closets). We have a cat tree (she sleeps on it often), a cat scratch pole and a cardboard box around the place.

Nope, she never strains.

Try adding a few more cardboard boxes? You can never have too many.

Hopefully she'll get bored with the litter box soon if she finds something better. I'm sure you're not too keen on snuggling a litter cat.

I have a ragdoll who came from a cattery (long story) and she used to do this, too. It was suggested to me that cats who come from environments with lots of other cats will do this for territorial reasons, but Maggie seems to have grown out of it.
