Philly requiring bloggers to pay $300 for a business license
They say that they see Blogs as a potentially lucrative business, so everyone with a blog that makes any profit that they report on tax forms (as required by law). Makes no difference if it's multiple thousands or $11 over 3 years.
I think just about every municipality has had to cut its budget over the past few years, if not come up with new and sometimes imaginative ways of creating income (i.e. taxes) for the state/county/city coffers which are disturbingly running dry. But this one really takes the cake, IMO.
Putting a tax on opinions that people around the world may or may not care about? That you may or may not earn any money off? This ranks right up there with the city officials shutting down the kid's Lemonade Stand because it lacks the business license necessary.
One of the comments on this story speaks volumes, IMO. "It's not the money they want but the silence it will buy."
