1. No alcohol

2. No birthday/christmas celebrations

3. No blood transfusions

And if you think your going to heaven when you die think again, were just going to be a speck of dust on the road because theres only so many going and they know who they are

They spread their word through their magazines. Watch Tower I think is the name.

They sometimes stand on the streets of downtown. They are not intrusive. They will wait for you to approach them and then talk to you.

They also go house to house in pairs, sometimes with small children. Very nicely dressed and very friendly. If you express interest in them by either buying or accepting a Watch Tower magazine as a gift, look for regular visits from them.

Here are a few additional websites

And that's just what happend when Pam at the office couldn't say no, so now they come in once a month with a magazine. One day Pam will be on holiday though and they'll have to see me, but i'll be polite as i always am if they come knocking and tell them no thanks as i have my own religion

I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses....PM me if you want to know anything. Anyway, the official websites are:
http://www.watchtower.org/ and
http://www.jw-media.org/

If you go to websites written by people who hate Witnesses, you can't really believe everything they say. If I wanted to know about Catholics, I'd go through their official channels or talk to a Catholic personally....

By most mainstream Christians, the Jehovah's Witnesses are not considered to be Christians and tend to border on the side of cultish. They add to traditional beliefs regarding salvation, they deny the deity of Christ and the Trinity, and don't believe in heaven for all who believe, only the 144,000 JWs who have been "born again". The rest of the JWs will reside forever on Paradise Earth. There's a lot more, but these are just the differences in major doctrines between Christianity and Jehovah's Witnesses.

From Watchman Fellowship, http://www.watchman.org/

Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, Charles Taze Russell, Brooklyn, NY: Satan is the originator of the idea of the Trinity. The Father is the supreme God whose real name is Jehovah. Jesus is a created being known originally as Michael the Archangel; he is "a god," not Jehovah. Jesus only rose spiritually, not bodily, from the dead. The Holy Spirit is the impersonal active force of God. Only the anointed class (or little flock) numbering 144,000 will go to heaven, while faithful "other sheep" will live eternally on a paradise earth; the lost will cease to exist (annihilationism). Publishes the Watchtower and Awake! magazines, the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (their own version of the Bible), as well as numerous books. Originally called International Bible Students, followers today are called Jehovah's Witnesses. A Profile is available.
You can get a lot more information from a conservative Christian perspective at CARM, http://www.carm.org/jehovahs-witnesses.

I think they also have a set date for when judgement day will happen and prepare for it.

My father is one. I won't speak of the religion itself as it seems we have someone here already that can answer questions.

I will say though that growing up celebrating my birthday (and everything else we celebrated growing up) and now he does not makes it incredibly difficult. He celebrated my birthday for 20 years and now, barely acknowledges me.

I would like to understand more, not in an effort to become one (because I do not want to) but in an attempt to understand my father.

The reason I am curious is because my DH has been corresponding with them, and I feel nervous about it. (No offence to any JW, the only thing I knew of the religion was the 'cultish' reputation they have)

DH is a Christian, and a fairly devout one. (I am still figuring all of that out for myself)

Anyway, the JW came to our door one day, and DH started talking about the bible with them. Then he started going out for coffee with them, and now they have invited him to a bible meeting this weekend.

This bible meeting with them was making me feel uneasy, so I decided to seek out info on them.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Does Josh know of their policies as well Nat?.

Don't get me wrong, if you say your not interested and that you have your own religion they do accept it and walk away.

When my Mum died i was so low as you can imagine. 2 weeks after her funeral one came to my door, and believing in God i took it as a sign that she was brought to my door to comfort me and basically tell me that my Mum was fine and that she was in Heaven, but i was so wrong!. It ended up that i got so upset by what she toild me that i had to tell her to leave the house. She was the one who told me my Mum was no more than a speck of dust on the road.

Fortunately i spoke to a friend who was the verger at our village church at the time, so when i told him he reassured me and reminded me on what i was brought up to believe in.

Well I think I scared them away for good. Not intentionally. They came knocking on my door at 7 in the morning. I was wearing my husband's sweatshirt - 4xl - over tiny tiny shorts and they asked if they could come in and speak. I had my face out of the door but was blocking the kids from getting out. I told them I didn't think I was dressed for company, and they turned white in the face and haven't come back. That was three years ago.

They have a bad reputation around here. Mostly people think they hound you to join. I never had that experience. I know two older ladies came around regularly and it was comforting in Nana when she was home alone and sick. They were very polite and it was mostly small talk. Nana was a strong Catholic too.

Only thing I'll say is I do not agree with a lot of what they teach. They seem to take things out of context from what is in the Bible.

They ring your doorbell at wee hours of the morning on Saturday.

I really am not that familiar with their beliefs. When they come to my door, I just tell them I am a Christian, attend church and am not interested in their magazines. If I were you, I would PM this person who says they are a Jehovah's Witness and get first hand information.

I don't get home visits from JWs because we have a number code you need to type in to get in to this building (apartment block). I do get harassed by them if I'm alone on a bus stop etc. We happen to have our country's largest JW 'church' (dunno what it's really called in english, the place where they gather) in this city. The word 'harass' because they have never respected my 'thanks, but no thanks/I'm not interested' comments and keep just preaching..

My mom used to have them visit her 'too often and too early', but that changed few years ago when mom was on a holiday and I was spending time at her house with some of my friends. It was early saturday morning, we had been partying the whole night and I was still up with 2 other friends when the doorbell rang. We had been playing with some make up during the night and I went to open the door wearing a corpse paint, as were my friends (for those who are not familiar with corpse paint, here is an example pic: click)....The look on the JW's faces was priceless, they asked me if I would like to talk about god with them, and I asked if they would like to talk about Satan with me (note: I was quite drunk..). They backed out and stuttered something like 'this propably wasn't a good time, maybe we should come back some other day...'. They haven't visited ever since.....

Mom is happily wondering why they don't wake her up at 7 am on weekends anymore but I'm too embarassed to tell her.
