A great series of pictures featuring the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain. The British made great use of their fighters, ground control, and radar in fending off the German attacks. I read a good book about this not too long ago. The Germans didn't know it, but the RAF had used up all its reserves and the Luftwaffe was starting to whittling them down when Hitler called off the attack prior to the winter of 1940. If the Germans would have kept up the pressure through the winter and following spring they may have been able to launch an invasion of the British Isles. Fortunately, they didn't and it ended up being the first costly defeat of the war for the Germans.

I remember reading an article, just in the last year or two, of an RAF pilot that stopped a German plane headed for Buckingham palace by ramming it in mid-air. He bailed out and survived and was in service to the crown for years afterward. Not long ago, they actually found the wreckage of his plane where it had been covered during the war to repair the street where it crashed. The old pilot was present when they finally were able to bring the wreckage up out of the dig. It was a pretty cool moment I'm sure.

I love reading history like that. My nephew in law is a Squadron Leader in the RAF so i wonder if he's seen it?

Did it mention the Canadian and American pilots who volunteered for the RAF? There were a number of them, as I recall. Those guys certainly epitomized the "stiff uppper lip."
