Flea Remedy--Is this Safe??

I just read this and I'm wondering if it's safe to use these essential oils on kitties (& dogs)?

Help your pet repel the pesky fleas with this trick: Dab a drop or two of lemon essential oil (like lemon balm or lemongrass) on the back of his neck and on his rump. Thanks! I had no idea how to go about searching online. I don't think I'll take a chance with any of the lemon type oils.

my holistic minded vets put it plainly... NO essential oils On or Near the cats
..
