Please Help Provide Clarity... Scary Cat moment today

Trying not to cry. Majel just tried to bite me. I reached down to pet her and she was sleeping and she lunged at me. She's never done anything like that before. In response, I just tried to soothe her and tell her it was okay.

All day she has been trying to be close to me but she's not a cuddler. I just figured she wanted mommy because she was sick. Majel- who has never been sick the almost year we've had her - has started getting green goopy so we're starting to treat that.

I'm scared. For her, not me. She seems okay now and normal but I've never seen any aggression from her AT ALL and we've had her well it will be a year on the 3rd.

I hope my baby feels better soon.

What would cause her to react that way? It was COMPLETELY out of character. I've even tried to get her to be mean to just get some aggression out cuz I know sometimes kitties just need some time to kick a towel and let it out. She won't do it. She'll just grab my hand with her feet and push my hand up to her face. Plus, it's nice to know what levels you can push the cat when you're playing so I tried her out before I brought her home.

I know I joke a lot of the time that she's a little slow and I really think she IS a little bit, but maybe there really is something wrong with her brain? Or maybe just maybe I woke her out of one of those bad dreams? But she seemed so still and fine when she was asleep like nothing was bothering her.

Help?

Probably not feeling well and might have been sleeping deeply. It's easy to really startle them if they've been sound asleep. I've accidentally startled some of mine and they end up running halfway across the house before they're awake enough to realize what was going on. I've had one of the kittens wake up hissing before from being startled, too.

You said green goopy eyes? Such as what Mandarin gets with his herpes? It's possible she has it, too, if it's presenting in much the same way.

cats can react very quicky and kind of violent when startled from sleep. Survival instincts....

I second what everyone has said. You probably just startled her from a deep sleep and she reacted out of instincts, not because she doesn't love you. I've done that on many occasions, and while I've not been bit, they've run away down the hall before they've had time to even fully wake up.

Just give her time and be patient and all will be okay.

Yes, green like Mandarin. I'm hoping it's just a URI and not a sign that we'll have chronic herpes problems and be so herpe together... but if so that's okay.

My vet was out of town, so I took her to the other doctor's office. $63 later - not that the price matters because her health is worth it - they told me exactly what I knew. She has an eye infection and they gave us some neopolydex - hopefully a stronger dose - that we have to give her twice a day rather than Mandarin's 4x a day stuff he has at home.

They didn't take her temperature but we're going to give the antibiotics a shot. Majel won't be able to see our vet until the earliest August 31st because my vet's out of town. The other vet was really sweet but she wasn't as competent as I thought she could be. But she did monitor her walking around the office to make sure she hadn't pinched a nerve or exhibited other signs of pain to explain her lashing out. She couldn't explain that at all.

It was scary. I've petted her a zillion times when she was sleeping ... So atypical behavior.

No brain scans done or anything but I'll talk it over with my vet.

And if this is just the way she responds when she is sick, well let's hope she never ends up with anything chronic, poor love.

Majel has began an aversion to being petted since we started the drops, and it is SIGNIFICANTLY worse today.

Have we ruined our kitty? I wish I could explain to her that we're just helping her. She won't even do the food game with me where I let her smell what I'm eating. She acts like I'm going to slap her if I put anything near her face. She's an iota less severe in her reactions to my husband - since she's in love with him - but bearly. Then she sits in the floor screaming for string and petties but when we go to pet her, she runs away, or flinches so we can't pet her.

More help? Is this because of physical problems or mental or both? I don't know what to do to get her back to happy.
