As you will soon find out when the others come online, we have lots of members here who have cats and babies and no harm has come to them

The most obvious thing is to make sure your hands are washed after scouping the litterboxes etc..

Welcome to TCS! As Susan said, many of our members have babies or are expecting, and being cat owners is not a problem. This article provides information about the few minor safety precautions to be taken and should put your mind at ease.

My kids grew up around cats and kittens. On the floor playing with them as soon as they could crawl.

They are now in their 30s. No ill effects!!
It has taught them to respect animals. I used to work at a tour farm and the joke around there was we hoped the animals wouldn't catch anything from the kids that visited!

Enjoy your cat along with your child. A cat is a companion animal. It is not wild. Make sure she is up on her shots and your home is clean.

Keep the litter box in a place inaccessable to the child. As was said, wash after cleaning it. Feed kitty where the child cannot get into the food. Although, once I did catch my son with a piece of kibble in his mouth.

Relax and enjoy.

Our daughter's first word was not "dada" or "mama" - it was "seesuz" for my cat (Susie).

My family doctor told me he wished people would not tell pregnant moms a whole lot of nonsense including the old "get rid of the cat" thing. He said that I would have built up any immunities to anything the cat may have and that this would be passed on to my baby. He also did suggest that my hubby take over litter duty while I was pregnant though.

I ensured that when I breast fed, my cat was allowed on my lap beside the baby so she would know she was not "replaced" by this little furless animal.
The two of them developed a special bond and considering Susie was a Siamese and didn't like a lot of people, she was wonderful with our daughter.

So, bottom line, relax and enjoy both your fur baby and your furless baby when it arrives.

I'm due in a month, and giving up my cats never crossed my mind. If I clean the litter box I just make sure to wash my hands really well afterward (like I would anyway). Just because there is a small risk of toxoplasmosis from the feces, which you can also get from eating undercooked red meat.

And of course, make sure you supervise the baby with the cat/s at all times. For both of their protection. I know neither of my kitties are mean at all, but the younger one likes to play and she plays with her claws sometimes. Keeping them trimmed helps reduce accidental scratches.

I'm sure more members will be along to covered what I've missed.

Most of this comes from an incident in the 1940's when a housewife who had just had a baby, came in to the nursery to find to her horror her cat was sitting on the baby's face. She threw the cat outside, pitched a royal fit and told her hubby the cat was trying to kill the baby! When the truth was revealed- the cat was licking old milk left on the baby's face, the damage had already been done. It has circulated for centuries that cats try to smother babies, try to catch all their breath while they are sleeping. All of which is hogwash- cats and babies grow up together just fine all the time. My first recollection when I was a tiny one is a huge orange and white cat that shared my crib. Goldie and I grew up together and I used to lug him around like a doll and he never complained.

I wish I had a cat around when I was a baby... I suffered cat allergies throughout my childhood, and I have read in numerous places that exposing children to animals in their first year will dramatically reduce the chance that they will be allergic.

Plus, like others have said, it helps teach kids how to treat animals with kindness, and it teaches them responsibility when they are old enough to help with the animal's care.

Nuh uh...might give me away!
Congratulations on your upcoming joy!!!!

My husband and I just found out that I'm pregnant a couple of weeks ago, and it never crossed our mind to give up our two boys. I've actually done a lot of research on this subject, to pen a rational response to a well-respected but misguided (and out of touch) pediatrician who kept the "cats will maliciously hurt your baby out of jealousy" myth going in this day and age.

Basically, the CDC has no documented case of a toxoplasmosis transmission from cat to pregnant woman. In fact, your wife has more of a chance (though still unlikely) to come into contact with it if she were handling raw meat or gardening. But if this cat has been in your home for some time (i.e., before she was pregnant), she may already have immunity to it, IF the cat even has it.

If you're concerned about the safety of your little one after birth, just make sure to take precautions. We plan on installing screen doors to our nursery, to replace the normal interior doors we currently have. This way, we can leave the baby in the nursery, and the cats can see, hear, smell, etc. but not have un-supervised visits.
Our boys are each very large, so if they got too cuddly, they could accidentally hurt the baby (keyword: ACCIDENTALLY).

In short, what you decide is up to you, but please make sure your decision is informed. Just because your friends tell you one thing and we tell you another, doesn't mean you shouldn't try to do some searching online. Go to the CDC website and search for toxoplasmosis, go to the HSUS and find information on cats and babies, etc.

There is nothing on a cat you need to get too worried about, they are very clean animals. Just make sure they have flea medication applied monthly, and wash your hands regularly.

There have been many studies showing that children exposed to cats and dogs from a young age have less problems with allergies later in life. A pet also teaches a child to respect animals, teaches them responsibility, and provides a furry friend who will love them unconditionally and provide comfort.

There are many reasons to keep a pet in your child's life.

They say that you shouldn't change the litter box because of some bacteria or something cats can track in but if it is an inside cat I dont think that is an issue and that is only when the women is pregnant. Besides if your cat is an outside cat chances are they came in contact with it before which I believe means that you are probably already imune.

Though I suspect this person registered just to post this nonsense, it still deserves a big eye roll...

What do you think women did hundreds of years ago, before neo-natal care and pre-natal vitamins? We're all still here. How do you think farm women gave birth to multitudes of children? I can guarantee you a hundred years ago women who lived on farms weren't staying away from animals for the duration of their pregnancies... My mom gave birth to 8 perfectly healthy babies despite having dogs in the house and cats in the barn. My brother and SIL adopted their dog well before their 2 children were born... and I'm pretty sure she didn't isolate the dog while she was pregnant.
