Flea control with a new stray kitten & and established "herd" and other Q's

Hi all! I went hunting for a cat forum this AM as I need some advice on caring for the wee bitty I found on the side of the highway yesterday afternoon.

Bacon is maybe 4 weeks old. He's very skinny, had a mild flea infestation and definitely has some ear mite issues. He is eating and peeing (still waiting for that first poop ), playing and mugging for attention.

He's living on our screened porch ATM as we have three indoor cats and a great dane who would probably mistake him for a squeaky toy.

We gave him a bath last night and it was pretty effective vs. the fleas, but there are some stragglers hanging on. I haven't been able to get anything off of him with a flea comb; he's so skinny and small that the fleas are able to run to find hidey holes before I can get to them.

We are planning on giving him another bath this evening, but I need some advice as to how to deal with the adults that have already jumped ship.

There is a carpet on the porch with very low pile (more like a sheet of felt) and a couch (velour- ahh, the 70's) that he has claimed as his own.

I would like to treat the couch and carpet with borax, but I have read varying opinions about how long to leave it down for max effectiveness. As Bacon must continue to live on the porch, leaving it down overnight isn't really an option. Would a few hours still be effective? Any other ideas?

As for the rest of the house- we've been as careful as possible, stripping naked after interacting with him and dumping all clothes straight into a pre-filled washer, but I'd rather be proactive. Everyone is getting a fresh dose of advantage today; do you think I should treat the house with borax as well? Any point in putting it down on hardwood and a leather couch? He's been here 18 hours and was inside for exactly 20 minutes post bath last night, swathed in a towel for ease of flea picking. I'm very concerned about the fleas and want to attack this problem NOW before they have a chance to get a foothold.

When would it be appropriate to treat the earmites and to worm him? I'm concerned that worming him right now will be too hard on his system. He doesn't have much of a "wormy belly", but considering he has every other common parasite I'm sure there is a worm load. Can I use prescribed miticide on such a young kitten, or should I stick to mineral oil for now?

Any other advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. He's a very cool little guy and I believe we already have a home lined up for him, barring a FIV or FeLV positive.

I've been around the internet long enough to know I can't post about an adorable kitten without offering pics, so here ya go.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Forums!

Ah, he IS adorable! You can even pretend he has some Maine Coon in him. A little bonus for his new owner!

I understand your precautions - you are entirely correct about them, and you are doing entirely right holding him in this quarentine, yet giving him quality time petting him....

One suggestion: you DO have animals inside, three cats and a big dog. So you surely do have good contact with a vet you are paying lotsa´. Ask this vet too!

Many are a little shy to phone and ask a vet they dont personally know, not being their customer. But you ARE a steady paying customer of this vet, so do phone and ask, dont hesitate.

In the time, you can surely try with some baby oil or even mild food oil in the ear against the ear-mites - 1-2 drops is enough. You dont need to fill up the ear... This is often enough against mild mites-attacks, although usually not enough against severe infections.
Although I agree in the long run he should have some more all-roung deworming. Fleas are also in-between host for tape-worm. So fleas = often tape worm too, some time after the infection.

Di-atomeus earth has been tried by some in the forums, both outwards and inwards. May be worth a try, both on the kitten if you cant use the vet recommended medicaments, and also on these rugs.

Hope others will fill in!

Tx for helping this little guy!

And good luck!

If he has fleas, he has tapes, that is a given. He really needs a vet to see him and advise you. They have the right, safe wormer and can also guide you about all the other issues he might face. He is a cutie pie to be sure, I sure hope you aren't using flea shampoo on him- all he needs is a few drops of DAWN liquid soap which will stun the fleas, then you pick off the rest with tweezers and drop them into a hot water mixture to kill them off. Your vet also will have the right fogger or flea treatment for your home.

Thanks guys. I should have added that the vet is on call and we've been commiserating. We have a 20+ year relationship spanning more pets than I can count, and I'm NOT shy about calling him.

We can't get in to the office until Monday morning, which is much longer than I want to wait for flea intervention. They don't have much to say about controlling them in the house either. He's an excellent vet and I love him, but he's old school (very country vet) and he and I both come from horse backgrounds, where veterinary care is a bit more of a dialogue between doc & owner than modern SA treatment has become.

It's not entirely my first rodeo but it has been a spell since I've found myself with a kitten this small. I generally get adult cats, puppies and crazy dogs. Crazy, crazy dogs.

Bacon is doing really well; I haven't seen a flea since bath #2 last afternoon. Set up a couple of flea traps last night and only caught moths so... I guess we're winning? Hard to tell. I don't buy DE as a feed through but have toyed with it for environmental pest control; I may pursue that. He's eating and has demonstrated that all bodily functions are operational. (Yay!)

I will stick with a drop of mineral oil for his ears right now; vet OK'd a wee bit of miticide but I'm still concerned about his system holding up to all the stresses and changes over the last couple of days. I'll consult further with the Doc on monday.

Thanks for the well wishes and welcomes!
