Cats + Leather

Thread Starter
HI, so I dunno if this is in the right forum or not so feel free to move if necessary.

I was wondering if getting leather/vinyl furniture would be more dander-friendly than cloth. I was thinking this because since it's made of more actual big pieces rather than woven stuff, that dander will have less place to creep in. Also, i'm guessing it'll be like 100 times easier to clean off the hair. My cats do't scratch leather so I also think this would be a good choice.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences? I'm still looking for ways to reduce cat allergens w/o having to rip up all our carpet and put wood in (though I'd LOVE to do that someday...grr money...)

Thank!

We have leather couches, and they are definitely easy to wipe clean of cat hair and such. Our only problem, is that even though the kitties don't actively scratch on them, if they slip when walking on the back of the couch, they dig in their nails, and you can definitely see EVERY single scratch mark they make.

My cats don't scratch upholstery fabric, but they love to scratch leather, so we don't have leather furniture.

None of our cats have ever tried to scratch our leather couches (only accidentally when they jump up and miss), but lately they have taken to scatching on our dining room chairs, which are a rough fabric. Guess I'll be upholstering them sometime in the near future!!

Well, seeing as my hubby works with leather in his shop,he doesn't want the kitties in there as when they jump for instance, not clawing itCOULD leave a pin prick mark.Having said that,if your kitties don't scratch leather i don't see why not.

Myself i just get the vaccum hose out and do my couches every couple of days, one i have is suede and i have to watch the new little ones, that one i also use a wrung out clean wet cloth and wipe down.Thats my 2 cents worth.
I don't know if this helped you,if my kittens were grown i MIGHT consider leather, yours must be able to make the jumps without clawing.

What color are you thinking of getting?
I have hardwood floors and easy peasy to vaccum up,never use anything else now Miao Kitty.Have a great day.

i prefer a flat-weave [like a canvas] smooth cloth cover. i have that & the velour-type [on the recliners] & Cable only claws at the recliners.

We have leather couches in the livingroom and haven't had any trouble with holes from the cats. Two of mine are front declawed and one wears soft paws on the front, I keep their back paws trimmed. It is easier to get the fur off, but more difficult to clean if they throw up/pee/poop on them. My cats don't usually do that but we did have it happen one time when Jinkers got locked out of the room his litter box was in (by one of the other cats). You can't use Nature's Miracle (my preferred cat stain/odor remover) on leather. I don't know anything about dust mites.

Cleaning and air filters.

I wouldn't go with leather. I know Tomas would sink his claws...or teeth into it, he just seems like one of those cats. Plus leather furniture is uncomfortable, you stick, freeze, or slide off. I'd rather not feel like the couch was actively trying to remove me!

Tight upholstery with a microfiber covers, here. Furniture gets vacuumed and covers get washed.

I get leather because of the animals. It holds up really really really well. The dogs (big dogs) are on it every single day for years, as well as people and the cat. The cat doesn't bother it.
