Is Fingal depressed?.

I got the most wonderful kitten three weeks ago, and I think he's depressed.
He turned three months on 7 August, but he has days - like yesterday - when he is somewhat active in the morning, but then he just sleeps throughout the day. And - during the night, as well. He just climbs up in bed with me and stays there.
I try playing with him, tossing different things at his direction, like aluminium foil balls, soft rattling toys for kittens, ...anything just to get him active. Sometimes, he plays with these, but often he just looks at them, maybe moves his little paw to touch them and that's it. He does not know how to play on his own. I mean, he never takes the toys himself and plays with them.

I work every day, from 8.00 - 4.30, and he is alone in the house. I know it's a long time for him to be alone, but I have no choice. Also, I simply can't afford to have one more kitten.

Please help. Any advice on how should I tackle this problem will be more then welcome.

Since low activity level and "depression" can be a sign of illness in cats - sometimes the only sign, he needs to go to the vet for a thorough check up. He's young and his immune system isn't as strong as an adult cat, because of this he could get seriously ill very quickly.

What is his vet history so far? Has he had a couple rounds of his kitten vacs, yet? How long ago was that (if done)? How did you get this kitten - friend/family member? Shelter? Found stray?

Daytime sleeping is normal for all cats, but a kitten should be more energetic.

Thank you, Wings

I got him through the vet, actually. The vet takes care of my friend's puppy, so I asked him to look around for a nice, healthy one for me.
When I just got him, he had some kind of an eye infection, which was cured.
Now, he has something in his other eye, some kind of infection, even the vet is not sure, and I am giving him prescribed eye drops and ointment.
It's his fifth day of treatment and I don't see much improvement. Though, it could be that antibiotics take somewhat longer to kick in and starts working.
He did not have any vaccines yet, since it's shortage in my country of those. But, I was told that if he stays inside, he'll be just fine until he gets some.

Well, since he's still sick he shouldn't be vaccinated just yet.

That's the answer to your question, though. He's ill. It could be herpes, which can be tested for. Ask the vet about it. In 4-6 weeks you can also repeat a FeLv/FIV test on him just to be sure, too.

Poor little guy. I hope he gets better soon. In the meantime make sure he's eating a good kitten food as he needs that to help him get better.
Once he gets better his energy should improve and even with you being gone during the day you should see more kitten behavior out of him - typical run around time for kittens is morning and night, with some afternoon/early evening playtime thrown in for good measure if they're awake.

Thank you so much
I know I'm probably making too much of a deal about this, but can't help it, I really care about him.
He is fine, he eats well, no secretion from his eyes, stool is normal...none of the usual signs that sick cat has.

I will contact the vet already this afternoon.

Thank you again!.

That's the fun thing about cats and illness... They can be ill and sometimes there will be no symptoms until it gets really bad. Cats are great at hiding illness, too.

Treatment does take time, so do keep your vet updated. He should get better, though.

Well, I just talked to my vet, and he thinks that it might be herpes. He can't do herpes virus tests, so is not sure. Still, he recommended that I should get some eye drops for herpes virus.

If he truly believes it's herpes you can get a supplement called l-lysine, it boosts the immune system and has some anti-viral properties. I'm not sure if it would be OTC in your country or not, or if it would be safe to use them from that source there. But you can ask your vet to get it for you. The powder is the easiest to use because you can add it to wet food and water and a cat won't taste it.
