New soon to be cat owner :)

I am new here and wanted to introduce myself. I love learning about as many things about all animals as I can.

I am 23 yrs old and am a student pursuing a Bachelors in Wildlife Biology, who moved in with my BF exactly one year ago tomorrow. We are about to adopt a cat in the very near future!

I was working as a vet tech prior to moving in with my BF and I just got a job at another Vet office, but this time working as a Kennel Assistant for their boarding facility. At the vet's office there is this cat who just had a litter of kittens. She is no more than a kitten herself, a couple months under a year old from what I was told. Her runt passed away, after having complications gaining weight, but her other 6 kittens are happy and healthy and their eyes are pretty open after a few weeks of life, but they are still pretty wobbly.

Momma cat (who they call Chica) is the cat we will be adopting. She is a pretty DSH who was from a military family and surrendered to a shelter with her sister. A coincidence is that a receptionist from the place I work now fell in love with her sister and adopted her, but didn't know it was her sister till later! :P

Anyways, I don't have a pic of her right now but will after she weans her kittens and we adopt her. She is so sweet she lets us do anything we want to her or her babies and is a great mom. The great thing is she is up to date on vaccines and will be spayed for me. I am going to rename her Rowan (Hence my username).

I was originally looking for a Maine Coon or Maine Coon Mix in shelters (my fav breed) but Rowan will be a great 1st cat for me too.

Welcome to you and your soon to be kitty! How awesome that's your adopting the mama. I foster for the local shelter and always have a harder time adopting out the moms. Can't wait to see pics of her!

My BF and I decided we didn't want a kitten, and I already know her personality and litter box habits since she is older (though since she is an awesome mom her kittens would probably end up awesome too). Also, since this is my first cat, I originally wanted a kitten, but I decided I'd be terrified to mess something up with it, so i am going to learn with a somewhat adult cat :P

I am pretty lucky she will be spayed for me, and I'd probably will only have to pay her adoption fee I am not sure how the adoption process will go yet though. I like that I can continue to see her, yet not take her home right away for a while for some reason.

You have put a lot of thought into what kind of cat would best suit your personal situation...
I wish more people would take the time to do that.

Rowan sounds like the perfect match for you.

Yea I have been planning for this cat for a looong time :P way before I even moved in with the BF. I have a dog, and the reason we were originally going to get a kitten is because out of the house she chase cats, but inside she is scared of them so I know she loves little critters and baby animals and treats them like her babies. It would have made meeting a cat easier for both the animals. but at least I know Rowan can jump to high spaces if she wants to get away and she is perfectly comfortable around dogs with her experiences around the vet office, so all I need to do mainly focus on making sure she doesn't have major predatory instincts towards our gpigs and reptiles and protect them and make sure my dog gets used to the cat okay. That makes my job HOPEFULLY somewhat easier.
