Cat secludes himself to select parts of house

We got a new cat about 5 months ago. Ever since, he avoids the living room, and instead goes in the dining/piano room, and sits in a corner under the couch or end table. He isn't frightened or anything, he'll let you pick him up without any fuss, but he's either in that corner, or laying in the middle of that room (and occasionally in our patio room, or in the kitchen if he wants food) - but he absolutely avoids our living room - and the upstairs, for that matter. The issue with this is that I feel he's being less than social, and I don't know why. We're all always in the living room, and it would be nice to have him in here with us and the other cats, being sociable, and being able to just sit with him in here while we all spend time together. I do notice that if you take him out of his corner though, and he hears any sort of unexpected noise, he'll run off and back into his corner.

I just want to know if anyone has any tips on how we can get him comfortable with exploring the entire house? He's really a sweet cat when you spend time with him in "his" room, but he won't dare join you in yours.

Same kitty, Binx? If so, how was he before the declawing?

Other than that, how does he get along with the other cats and do those rooms have ceiling fans?

But yes, some cats have their spots and are just a bit more skittish than others. I have one that stays in the bedroom all day until evening, and then she often sits under the table or over in the cat furniture. (unless after a moth) She was feral born and has come a very long way, but she's still skittish and wary of sitting out in the open in a room.

Yep, same kitty. the living room does indeed have a fan. And it's also the room with a TV, and my dad's loud mouth.. I have a feeling he might just not like rooms with a lot of noise. Also, he had gone upstairs for a period of time, but ever since we set a fan by the stairs, he doesn't go upstairs anymore.

Before the declawing, it was when we first brought him home, so he was even more skittish then, and only went under the couch. so if anything, he's improved since then.

I guess he just stays clear of louder rooms? I just wonder why that is, though.

Maybe noise is one of the reason because cat loves to sleep and relax, right? How about feeding him in the living room?

That could be a possibility, thanks!

Many cats just don't like loud noises. They have very sensitive ears after all. And plenty of cats are spooked of fans - that's something they get over with time.

Let him keep to himself. As long as he does come out to eat and moves around the house when it's quieter, and interacts with you, he's a normal cat.

Well, to my surprise, I came home from work tonight and binx walked into the living room with all of us, all the cats, and the TV on. He didn't stay in here very long, but he didn't run out of the room, just left when he felt like it I guess. But he was content when he was in here, rubbing up against things, and even layed down for a little bit. I guess it was just a matter of time.. but it seems like he's warming up now
