I would like as many details as possible of as to what a female cat goes through while they are in heat. For example, I would like to know why they crawl on the floor? I would like to know why they whine almost all the time and sometimes very loudly? Why do they sometimes spray? How long are they generally in heat for?

They do all that because they are trying to attract a mate and they want it...BAD!!! If your cat is in heat and unspayed and you're not a breeder, I'd suggest you take her to be spayed immediately and put her out of her misery. It'll help you feel better, too.

The whining is "calling" - means they are calling for male cats to come to mate.

The crawling with back legs treading and tail to the side is the mating position and a signal for the male cat.

They usually are in heat about 2-3 weeks and one cycle can blend into the next - most cats will cycle about once a month, but sometimes its more often.

Spraying is also the way to attract a male cat.

The cure for all of this is to spay her NOW - in heat or not. You cannot time her when she is out to spay her. This is why you should have them done by 3-4 months old before they start to cycle all the time. The longer you wait, the higher the risk of pyrometra (infection of the uterus) which can kill her or she will escape and get pregnant.

Just an FYI to remember from when you signed up to be a member of the forum, this site is a pro-spaying/neutering site.

2. Please make sure to spay and neuter your cats. Unless you are a professional breeder and your cat is part of a professional breeding program, please educate yourself to the importance of spaying and neutering by the time your cat is 4-6 months old. If you take care of a feral colony, please make sure to do so responsibly by practicing TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) protocols within the colony. By spaying and neutering, you enhance a cat's quality of life and improve their longterm health. You are also proving your love for cats because in acting as a responsible pet owner/caregiver you are minimizing the problem of cat overpopulation.
