Persi is my son. I am sure that nobody on TCS has trouble with identifying with calling your cats family members. So no, I am not married to a cat and I did not "know" Persi's mother. Persi is my son.

Now let's consider Alley. Alley was rescued by my wife's daughter's husband. Alley now lives with us. So that would make Alley my step-grandaughter in- law. You with me so far? OK, what relationship is Alley to Persi? I believe that Persi would be Alley's step uncle in-law.

And now for the baffler that was presented to me yesterday. My wife's brother told me that his wife's blood nephew had adopted a cat (named Simon.) So, using my faulty? logic till this point, what is the relationship of Simon to Persi and to Alley?

If you can figure this one out, you are amazing!

Persi is Simon's ________________.

Simon is Alley's ________________.

This is not for points, because I am afraid I may have the wrong answers but it would be interesting to see what other members think about this complex relationship with cats.

I would consider Persi and Alley brother and sister. Therefore, Simon would be a cousin to them both.

But using your logic, I think Persi would be Simon's second step-cousin and Alley would not be a relative of Simon's at all.

My MIL's cats I consider my neices and nephews, but I know that's not right. I just doesn't seem right to call a cat a BIL.

I can't even keep my own human family straight what with all the second, third, twice removed (what does that mean anyway?) I just gave up and call everyone family.

Lee, you have too much time on your hands!

Yes, I believe it is possible. I may have to get out my paper and pencil and work up a genealogy chart. Then I should utilize what I learn in my college genetics class.

I would, but the brain is protesting.
