Living with breeding cats

Since I am going back to school in September, and will be gone 2 days a week, I have gotten a roomate. He is the director of finance at my work and is a fussy 50+ man, and in a word - high-maintenance.

I haven't given a lot of thought to my cat situation before as it has been just me, or me and my ex, living at home. Now I am being made aware of what it is like for someone who is not necessarily a cat person. They are LOUD! I have two females in heat right now, and one male who is serenading them. The females are loose in the house and the male is in a monster sized enclosure downstairs. I have just finished building another enclosure, made from two uptown dog kennels, for a new cat I am bringing in to be bred to Tsekani and my basement looks a bit like a zoo. On another note, things get very creative when it comes to separating cats that need to be separated. My house can become a bit of a maze.

My new plan is to stuff the old furnace vent holes from the basement into his bedroom to try and dampen the noise (and smell when Tsekani pees). I keep up with the male pee by using Dr. Elsey's Senior cat litter and it works really well, but you can still smell it if you are not used to cats.

My two kittens are eight weeks old, and you'd be surprised at how much they sound like elephants when they run from one end of the house to the other. They are penned in my room when I can't supervise them but when they are loose their purpose in life is to destroy as much property as possible.

For those of you with perfect females and non-spraying males, you have my envy. I love my cats and my hobby, and wouldn't give it up for anything, but it is definitely an adventure.

PS - This is not meant as a complaint and no-one needs to post about, 'that's breeding cats, get used to it.' I am used to it and I do love it. This is just a bit of a look into the life of breeding cats in your home.

My hat is off to you! It takes a special person for sure. I wonder what your roommate is going to think of all of this. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

LOL!
I have one spayed cat, that is perfect for me and enough work, she is a gremlin. But adorable and her litterbox habits are great so I can't complain.

I agree - my husband is not used to females calling and when Ling came back into false heat after being spayed, it drove hubby crazy with her wanting attention and calling like she was in heat.

He never would be able to tolerate breeding cats (more then one female). I was used to my rexes but that was before we were married.

I do miss kittens tho

Sorta understand. I tnr cats and sometimes have them upwards of a week before clinic can take them. The last cat I had was a ft spraying machine. Hubby commented on how little the cat drank vs pee produced. What works here(non breeding just lot of cats) is rooms zoned animal free. he has 2 rooms away from the cats main area. our bedroom has been the holding area for 2 moms and 9 kittens-that's interesting-every am we wake up with a scratch or two.

How is the setup in house any chance you can keep cats further away from his room?

Unfortunately, his room is directly over the cat enclosures. I could trade rooms with him if it gets too bad, but my room is much bigger. He was fully aware of the situation before he moved in, and his rent is reduced in exchange for help with the cats while I am on the road. He says he doesn't mind at all, it's just my heightened awareness of the cats now that someone else is in the house.

It actually lights a fire under my butt in terms of keeping things clean. I am more diligent in my litter box routines and the rest of the house is getting junked out to relieve clutter.

My opinion, no normal person likes to live with entires or kittens

It's amazing how loud kittens can be, thundering up and down the hallway like a heard of elephants.

I'm lucky so far, mine are not dirty girls. But they are not perfect They are loud, I take them off call so they are only loud for 2-3 days and that's fine for me not sure how it would go with a room mate though.

I imagine it will be some adjustment for an outsider.

Of course I adore what I'm doing and wouldn't change it, good luck with your room mate.
