Ok, I'm a server at a restaurant, I've worked there off and on since they opened (mostly on), almost five years now. The restaurant is located in our little down town. One building over from us is the Newspaper. The newspaper has this black and white huge cat. He's neutered and pretty well taken care of, except they let him roam around outside. He's a pretty awesome cat though, such a little personalty. He's been around the whole five years, so he must be getting older.

Well, last night we had a large party on our enclosed patio. A little four year old girl was allowed to wander where ever the hell she wanted. She would play with our computers, and just go where she wanted.

When the party was done eating, I was getting ready to go and the little girl was crying and her mom was talking to the manager and a server was on the phone. I overheard stray cat. And I butted in, I said "Are you talking about the black and white cat?" They said "Yes." I said "That's the newspaper cat, he isn't stray." I found out he "bit" the little girl. And the other server was on the phone with the cops. I told them their was no doubt in my mind that he's vaccinated. He just doesn't have a collar because he's outside a lot.

The cops were coming, and I told them they should call Mike. But I was getting mad about this whole thing. I left. I looked for the cat as I was leaving, I was gonna take him home with me and give him back to Mike later. Then maybe they'd think it was another cat.

Here's the thing:

WHO lets their four year old pet a random stray animal?

If she had at least been supervising the girl she could have seen that the cat was getting aggravated and stopped the little girl from petting him, or that the little girl was harrassing him.

I've known that cat for five years, and he does get overstimulated like all cats. But he shows signs before he bites, and he doesn't bite hard. It's like a nip.

And I'm not convinced he did bite her, because when I was leaving I heard the little girl telling the other people in their party that were outside talking that the cat scratched her. And they said "I think he bit you."

I don't know what happened. If Mike can prove he's vaccinated he'll be okay, right??

The same person who lets a """little four year old girl was allowed to wander where ever the hell she wanted. She would play with our computers, and just go where she wanted."""

You answered your own question.

If they can prove the cat is vaccinated, I would think it will be ok, but I don't know.

If they can't and the family notifies the health department and/or animal control, they will likely want to trap the cat and quarentine it for 10 days to rule out rabies. It won't matter if the child was bitten or scratched. According to the athorities in Florida, because cats and raccoons lick their paws, the spread of rabies is a risk even if there was no bite.

If they trap the cat, the newspaper may have to go through the humane society (and pay) to possibly get the cat back.

It stinks. I hope there is something you can do to prevent the potential confiscation of this poor kitty!

Sounds like the idiot parents I invited to my cookout once, that let their kids drag my cats around, let them go near the stray cats (one is a biter) even though I warned them about it, let them be around my loaded guns in the house ... I dont like kids to begin with, and stupid "parents" make it worse.

Do you know, this makes me mad,I have 3 children aged 8, 4 and 3 and as we have 6 cats I have taught them to basically respect them and other animals. If they pick our cats up and I tell them to put them down and they don't and the cats scratches them then that is their own fault and they should learn from that. This however is a case of neglectful parents who basically wanted to go out and probably couldn't find a babysitter so just felt lumbered with the child, what a shame and how terrible for the poor cat, hope it turns out ok for the cat. The parents won't change and that's a fact! x

I'm with you girl, I don't like kids either, it seems like this little girl is a real brat and her parents have no brains. Whether she got bit or scratched, she deserved it, I only hope the cat doesn't suffer because of it.

I think someone at the restaurant was amiss for not asking the parents to control their child. You know a business has some responsibility as to what happens on their property. It is reminds me of when we are at church. If the parents don't watch out for their children, then some of the administration of the church has to handle it with the parents.

Unfortunately things in a restaurant arent as cut and dry as being able to say something to the parents. There is a fine shakey line that is walked when customers bring in unruly kids and dont stop them from acting like jerks. Ive been in situations where kids are screaming and throwing temper tantrums in the middle of dinner rush and we cant really say anything not for them to try and tone it down nothing. As a server I would just try and do what I could to appease the kid and shut it up. To this day I cant stand waiting on families especially ones with little kids. Thankfully the only 'kids' I wait on now are the 4 legged kind and BF.

Anyhoo had I been in your situation KSCatlady I would have taken the cat too. Hopefully this all gets resolved without anything happening to that poor tormented kitty.

Definitely do that.

I hate people who won't control their children. I don't hate children, I work with children. But I hate most parents.

Keep us posted and many vibes for kitty (what's his name?)

Well, of course we made sure she didn't go anywhere dangerous, and asked her not to touch our expensive equiptment, but are we supposed to follow her around when she's outside the restaurant? I'm pretty sure that isn't our responsibility.

His name is Cat. Well, that's what Mike (the newspaper guy) calls him. His grandkids call him Oreo. But I like Cat, so that what I call him too.

I'm really scared to find out what happened to him. I work again on Sunday, I'll ask then what happened to him.
