I'm currently with TXU and want to switch with either Green Mountain Energy or Co-Serv. (Currently in Lewisville, moving to Carrollton)

The kWh average for us is 1300. Is that alot? If so, its these apts!!
Anyhow here are the sites for these providers and their rates:

GME: http://greenmountainenergy.com/index...=45&Itemid=153

CoS: http://www.coserv.com/Electric/Custo...0/Default.aspx

Our current TXU rate is variable month/month and goes as high as .14 - .16/kWh!!

What do you think? Living on my own for the past 3yrs and still clueless
and the bf doesn't know anymore than me!
Thank you

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
I wish I could be of assistance...Im currently livid with my electric company because I swear every month our rates keep going higher and higher. Last year our bill at this time was about 50-60 bucks. This year...get ready...$170!!!!! And the usage is the same! How about that!! I would love to switch companies but its honestly seems like such a hassle especially knowing that our bill and usage is going to go down even more for the winter months!!

Be sure to find out about ALL the charges. Several people have been very shocked by an "access charge" from Oncor that they have to pay, in addition to the normal electrical charges.

Thanks for the feedback. We already pay around 170-200 a month and i think its due to the older appliances and insulation.

3catsN1dog, do you have an account online for your provider? Online you can shop plans vs talking to someone who probably wont tell you everything available.

mrblanche, i dont even know what Oncor is but i noticed that when looking at the prices for my area and those companies. I'll ask about the access charge though whenever we figure out who we want to go with.

Important reminders from a primer page re: alternative energy supply companies (also known as ESCO's in this region):

Remember, Con Edison is your energy delivery company; ESCOs are energy supply companies.

While you can explore alternative suppliers through PowerYourWay, Con Edison does not send salespeople to your door or have them call your home or business. We want to remind you that ESCOs do not represent Con Edison. Representatives from ESCOs authorized by the New York Public Service Commission may visit or call your home or business to discuss their services with you. You should never show them your Con Edison bill or reveal your account number unless you are ready to make a switch to an ESCO.
So I guess you can ask your state's Public Service Commission or look on the back of your bill. It seems folks (around my area) might be able to get a 7% discount as incentive for 2 months if they switch.. http://www.poweryourway.com/residential_customers.asp

Honestly I wish I knew the in's and out's of this whole alternative energy stuff. If switching companies saves me a noteworthy amount of money, then great, I don't need to understand saving money-- but if my bill stays the same, I'll wonder "What's the point?" And if costs were to go up after a switch, then the suspicious side of me will be upset and look for answers.

Wow, I have no idea on this stuff. My town has city-owned utilities and I don't have a choice in the matter.

I guess what I would do is call both companies and have them explain why their service and prices are better. Make them explain each and every charge. Ask the new company what your bill would look like with the same usage you've had in the past. Etc.

I'd love to hear more comments on this. I actually wish this was current events/coffee & donuts chit-chat on Main Street. It hasn't reached that point yet. (e.g. appearing on the cover of Newsweek, etc.)

From what I understand, it all boils down to paying less in taxes if we go with the alternative companies. I still feel suspicious and underinformed. I'd feel better if & when the topic enters mainstream American neighborly conversation.
