A question about mating cats

Why do female cats have more than one partner? Why do they have to call all the male cats around them?

It turns out that many species do that, including a lot of birds that were thought to be "permanently mated." The short answer is that it guarantees the best diversification of the gene pool.

A true cynic would say that they're just like humans and prefer variety in life.

Cats are basically solitary and if you call to attract a male, it gives more of a chance for at least one tom to find the female.

And I've read (where someone has observed a cat colony) that its not always the biggest and toughest male that wins the breeding. The female actually decides who she mates with. While the toughest tom is fighting another tom, sometimes the female will go to a "sideliner" and choose him to breed with her while the tom is fighting!

The toughest one will probably get his chance eventually, but he's not the only one to breed her.
