My 13 years old Holly just find out has arthritis. I had been feeding her Nutro complete for long time, then I changed to IAM, and now with the recommendation by the staff at Petsmart. I bought her the Purina One Vibrant Maturity 7+ Senior. But after I learn so much from this thread, I do not think the Purina good enough. The vet gave Holly the pain killer and Glyco-Flex II which has MSM and glucosamine HCI in it. Holly is not cripple anymore, but she hesitates to jump.

I also has a stray with FIV+. He came to my deck last March. He came and gone. This Feb., he showed up on my deck with a lot of scratches and two deep punctures around his throat area. I took him to the vet. He found out Oldie has FIV+ and suggested me to put him to sleep. I said no. Then he suggested me to neutered him. I agreed. Since then, he never go away. But he stays outside. In early June, I noticed that he has been losing weight. I thought because of the summer heat. But last Monday, He started eating less food and not drinking as much water. He was very weak. I took him to the vet on Wed. He was dehydrated, red blood count low, white blood count up, plus fever up to 105. He has blood transfusion the same day. After two day, he blood count keep dropping again and again. This Tuesday, the red blood count was not even showed on the computer chart. He needs another blood transfusion. It costs $3000.00. He needs 2 units of blood from two different cats. The vet told me it is a high risk for Oldie. I need to take Oldie to the University Vet Hospital for the 2nd transfusion. Plus another blood report came back that Oldie also has the haemobartonellosis and bartonella. The vets. were amazed that Oldie still survive with that low blood count. At the meantime. I have been researching on the internet of Oldie situation and FIV+. By accidently, I found the forum about Transfer Factor. I was not sure that is that a scam or not. But they claimed it helped to cure animals and humans. At last, I willing to try and talk to the vet. Since both him and I think at this situation, either 2nd blood transfusion or the transfer factor(Both of these are taking chance). The Transfer Factor arrived Wednesday. They gave Oldie one after 5 pm with other medication together, and one next morning, and one later afternoon. On Friday morning, Oldie had another blood test. He red blood count was from .017/.17 to 7 point something. It is a very good news. We all hope he will keep on improving. He can come home Monday if he red blood count is up to 15 - 18. I am still not sure because of the Transfer Factor or the medication. The vet has been treated Oldie the antibiotic since day 1 for haemobartonellosis and bartonella, which the haemobartomellosis is breaking down the red blood cell.

Thank you to read my long story. I really need all your suggestions with good nutrient cat food for both of my cats. Can and dry. They both need good immune system. Holly also need the one for senior cat and joint. The vet told me Oldie is around 4, but with his action and activity, he act look an older than his age. I need plenty of nutrient for every part of Oldie's health.

Thanks again!

Sharky is a person I trust here for food recommendations - perhaps she'll be along soon. Just wondering, did any of your vets recommend any prescription foods for your cats? Especially for Oldie? I thought there were at least a few very nutrient dense prescription foods out there, but I may be wrong.

But bless you for your love and care of these babies.

The vet. only gave Holly the pain medicine, and the Glyco-Flex II Soft Chews. He told me that he like IAM and Science Diet pet food. For Oldie, I hope to take him home tomorrow. May be the vet. will give him some medication.

Sharky:
I am still learning. What do you mean by calorie dense? I want joint help for my senior cat Holly. Oldie is 4 according to the Vet. He needs to have a strong immune system since he have FIV+. He is not active.

Thank you

I was attempting to understand your nutrient dense... see calorie dense often = higher fat which for senior s and a immune comprimised can be good...

May I ask why you went from Natural choice ( which IMHO is solid) to Iams ( which is much less solid IMHO)?

What do you want to avoid in a food?

at Four you can likely feed both a senior food as you say he is not active...

please look at this site: www.trixsyn.com for some jt help

It is because my vet said he like IAM, then Science Diet. He is not fond of Nutro. Then, I could not find IAM with joint health for Holly at PetSmart. The staff recommended me to Purina senior. For Oldie, she recommended Purina Smart Blend which has real salmon with omega 6, antioxidants and protein.

Sharky, if you think Nutro is good, I will go back to it. You have a lot more knowledge than me. I just start to learn. Somehow, I read too much information in this week. My head is spinning now.

Corn gluten is okay as an ingredient .... I would prefer it to be 5th or later.. but it serves to help with UTI prevention and mineral balancing ... IMHO Nutro is likely the best of what you have feed... Navy highlight = good for most , Orange = okay for most , Pink/ magenta = IMHO I would not recommend
Nutro as you gave me

We have Petco here. I can also mail order. I will look up where I can get the good nutrient food for my cats. I believe there are other places than Petco and Petsmart here.
