The shelter where I volunteer currently has four black kittens, in addition to the two big black cats that have been there for several months.

Longhaired boy (front) and girl (back) when they were brought in about 6 weeks ago.

Little girl now, still kind of shy

Little boy, getting big and looking laid-back. Appearances can be deceptive. I think he may be a smoke, but he never held still long enough for me to really get a good look.

Short-haired litter of four. Two boys

and two girls

Momma cat actually got adopted first

The little red boy has also been adopted, but the rest are all still here.
Short-haired brother and sister

Longhaired boy and short-haired girl. She is really tiny

Short-haired boy and big momma black cat. This pose lasted about 2 seconds after I took the picture, just until he pounced on her tail and got thoroughly scolded.

This picture is to give you an idea of what the Cat's Cradle looks like. I need to take more pictures of the whole room instead of just close-ups of the kitties.

Love the Momma cat! I recently adopted a black cat, in part because I knew he didn't stand much of a chance in a shelter. I don't understand why people get so hung up over coat color. Buddy sheds, but so do my other cats. Same amount of maintenance!

I think it's a superstition thing. Black cats are supposed to be bad luck, no matter how gorgeous they are.

People also do not think black cats are "pretty." But everyone who sees Archie - who I will admit is big and fluffy - comments on what a handsome boy he is.....

As the humble servant of a black cat (Katie) for the past 17 years, I think they're absolutely beautiful.
They do tend to get overlooked for adoption, though, which is such a shame.

I don't get the aversion to black kitties either... I'm SO glad I have one. And she is freakin' beautiful!!
I know they all kinda look the same, but they are lovely.

Another thing is their facial features are not as obvious as those of varied colored cats, the eyes don't stand out so well, so that makes them supposedly less photogenic and immediately appealing.

IMO, with their black fur and nose the only thing you CAN really see on their face is their gorgeous eyes...:

I think that black cats' personalities are just a bit more dramatic with that "black cattitude" (my PussBuss KNOWS she's superior to the others), more loyal and more dependent on their chosen person. They're also the best at displaying the pure beauty of a cat's form.

I agree with you. Holland is really not THAT photogenic, I guess, but I don't have the best camera in the world, either.
She has the most beautiful deep gold eyes that I just can't capture on film. They're always either glowing or they look a different color than what they are.

Anyway, didn't mean to hijack the thread of those little cuties!

I LOVE black cats. Maybe it's something to do with the first cat I ever knew was jet black...or...what self-respecting Witch would be without a black cat to ride on her broomstick...

I love black cats, but you're right that they are hard to photograph, that's why I rarely post pictures of mine.

Mystik Spiral, you do a great job of getting gorgeous pix of Holand...wish you could come over to my place and take some of my guys!

Aw, thank you so much! The funny thing is... I think I take about a hundred photos of her for every one that I keep.
It's a wonder she doesn't run and hide every time she sees me pick up the dang camera.

Aww, such cuties!
Such a shame that people don't want to get black cats and dogs. I agree that their eyes look so much brighter and bolder surrounded by all that black, very pretty and mysterious.

that they get good homes soon!!

Oh, the black babies (and mama) are so beautiful. I love love love black cats, and it saddens me that so many people dismiss them. I do know that they are actually considered good luck in some countries. Were that it were so here. I'm hoping these guys/gals find forever homes quickly.
