In the last month, my sister's dog Jake had to have stitches due to a run-in with neighbor dog Dakota, I had a huge scare when I thought Holland had gotten outside, and now tonight... I was downstairs with my nieces and we heard a weird yelping, nothing like anything I've heard from Jake or my brother's dog Mallie, who's living here at the moment too. The girls ran upstairs, then came back down and told me Jake had accidentally gotten his tooth stuck in Mallie's ear. Ummm... what? The two dogs wrestle-play with each other all the time, so I just figured it had gotten a bit out of hand. No big deal.

Then we heard the yelping again. I went upstairs and found my sister, mom & BIL on the deck with the two dogs. Jake got his TOOTH stuck in Mallie's collar and they couldn't get him loose. By the time I came upstairs, Mallie was completely freaking out. I went to hold her still while my mom ran to get some scissors. She was choking to death from her dang collar, she sort of collapsed while I was holding her, my mom said later that her tongue was purple. She was foaming at the mouth and her bladder let go all over my pants. My BIL finally got the collar cut off, and poor Mallie ran straight to the basement.

I told my mom to PLEASE err on the side of caution and call the vet. She told them what happened and how she was acting. They told us to watch her for the next half hour. We finally got her to come upstairs. She was breathing fine, she was walking, but tail between the legs and ears pinned back. We think she was just scared beyond belief. Needless to say, Mallie and Jake are being kept apart for the night, and my mom wants to re-introduce them again very slowly over the next couple of days. We always had dogs when I was a kid, and I know my mom always loved the pets, but I have NEVER seen her as hysterical over an animal as she was tonight. She loves Mallie like her own kid... I am SO glad my BIL was home to help, I am absolutely NO good in a crisis...

I swear, Jake is the sweetest dog in the world, but he is just some sort of "accident magnet" or something... Mallie is obviously scared to death of him now, and he doesn't understand what he did wrong. I told my family, this is EXACTLY why I don't put a collar on Holland anymore. Anyway, everyone seems to be fine, crisis passed, hopefully the dogs can get to be friends again soon.

OMGosh! I'm glad Jake is OK and I can only imagine how frightened both dogs were. I'm glad your mom called the vet, too; you can never be too careful.

As for collars, we don't have them on any of our cats. There are just too many things a cat can get trapped on with a collar. We had an experience with Hydrox many years ago when he wore a collar and he almost died. No more.

Oh those poor doggies!
Sending vibes for them hun.

Years ago Mom had an incident with one of her cats where he got his collar stuck up in his mouth. We were out and when we got home, we noticed he had blood all over him. His mouth was bleeding from where it was rubbing and he couldn't get it out.
None of our cats have ever worn a collar since.

That's just it Kailie, if nobody had been home when this happened, Mallie would have either choked to death or ripped Jake's tooth out trying to get free. Holland is indoor-only, she's not a door dasher, and she's microchipped. So after reading horror stories about collars I decided to take hers off for good. This was my first personal experience with collar danger, and I think my mom has decided to keep Mallie's collar off too (Mallie's microchipped as well).

Yep, truthfully I think microchipping is the way to go. It's safer and is SUCH a peace of mind, in case they ever DO get out for whatever reason. Both Teyah and Pria are done since they have been adopted since the shelter started doing the microchipping and I want to take the rest of the kids and get them done too. Better to be safe rather than sorry.

I'm glad to hear the doggies are ok. I had a collar on my Misty for all of her almost 16 years and never had a problem with it...that being said, Autumn does not wear a collar. She is an indoor only cat and tho I have tried to get a collar on her in the past, I couldn't. I stopped trying so I just hope she never gets outside.

Our office here at the mobile home park does have all the info on the pets who live here so if she did get out I would let them know about it and they would keep an eye out for her. Also as you can see, Autumn has a very significant mark on her forehead which would make her easy to recognize and the office knows about that too.
