Finally got our kitten today - as expected moving with fleas and a belly full of worms
Although I've seen the neighbour a few times in the passing, I've had the feeling she was avoiding me.
I managed to talk to one of her kids the other night and when hubby and I came home late this afternoon from shopping, neighbour asked if we still wanted the kitten (?)
Anyway, as you will remember, the kitten had an umbilical hernia and neighbour said she would take him to the vet (I thought and pigs might fly first!!!)
She tries to tell me this afternoon that she'd taken the kitten to the vet and there was nothing wrong with him - but that he did have fleas (well, I would never have guessed
)
Been to the vet my rear end. He'd never been to the vet at all - and most definitely has an umbilical hernia. He was completely moving with fleas - even his coat isn't as good as it should be and I think he's undersized for a 12 week old kitten - probably due to him having worms. If he's got fleas, he's got worms.
I've already Frontlined him so that will bring the poor little soul relief from itching and will get Panacur tomorrow for the worms.
He was also very hungry (not a surprise) and within 5 minutes of him coming here he demolished a whole sachet of Whiskas Kitten. Being strange to our house I didn't think he would eat it. He's now miaowing his head off for more food
Monday, I have to go to the vet with Poppy (her eye is improving) so I'll see if I can get Keno in for his kitten check and registration with our vet at the same time.
At least I know our vet will put him right in no time at all. It may be that they will wait until he is 6 months old and do the umbilical hernia the same time as neutering him or they may think it is too big (it feels fully 1 inch in diameter) and repair the hernia in the next week or two - I would think they'll want him to gain a little weight before operating but will probably check him periodically. I know what to look for if the hernia becomes strangulated so I'm keeping a very close eye on it.
I really could thump my neighbour at times. She just hasn't got a clue. She is keeping one of the kittens and I know she won't look after her properly and she will breed her. None of her cats are neutered or spayed so they will inbreed with each other unless it is stopped. At least little Keno will be looked after properly. I really wish I had the space to take his siblings too.
Now, for Keno himself - and I promise photographs will be soon although they'll be taken with my mobile phone as I can't find the charging lead for my camera and the batteries are flat.
He is almost all black now apart from a couple of beige patches here and there on him. Unusually, he has very thin stripes on the top of his head but instead of going vertically from nose to tail, they go from ear to ear! It actually looks like his fur is crimped when the light catches it
He has very long legs and HUGE ears. He has quite a wedge-shaped head, massive eyes that have just a hint of a squint to them. I have no doubt there is Siamese in there somewhere - and he's also VERY talkative. He will sit and speak to you. He hasn't found his purr yet but that's to be expected. Everything is so strange to him at the moment.
He must be finding our house very strange - no noisy kids running around and pulling at him.
It'll take him time to settle in - one thing that does worry me is he seems to be very nervous of our dogs and the neighbour has a dog too - an over exuberant Staffie. Our GSDs are a lot quieter, especially Buddy who likes cats and is very gentle with them.
I'm sure Keno will gain confidence soon and I'll soon have him 100% healthy too
PS. Sorry for not being on lately. I had a bit of an accident and I'm wearing a splint on my hand a the moment. The hospital think I may have fractured the scaphoid bone in my wrist but as it doesn't show up until a couple of weeks after, I have to go back on Tuesday to have it x-rayed again. I'm hoping it isn't fractured as I would then be put into a cast for anything up to 3 months.
In the meantime, I'm having to be quite careful with it but at least it isn't painful now.
