Finally got our kitten today - as expected moving with fleas and a belly full of worms

Although I've seen the neighbour a few times in the passing, I've had the feeling she was avoiding me.

I managed to talk to one of her kids the other night and when hubby and I came home late this afternoon from shopping, neighbour asked if we still wanted the kitten (?)

Anyway, as you will remember, the kitten had an umbilical hernia and neighbour said she would take him to the vet (I thought and pigs might fly first!!!)

She tries to tell me this afternoon that she'd taken the kitten to the vet and there was nothing wrong with him - but that he did have fleas (well, I would never have guessed
)

Been to the vet my rear end. He'd never been to the vet at all - and most definitely has an umbilical hernia. He was completely moving with fleas - even his coat isn't as good as it should be and I think he's undersized for a 12 week old kitten - probably due to him having worms. If he's got fleas, he's got worms.

I've already Frontlined him so that will bring the poor little soul relief from itching and will get Panacur tomorrow for the worms.

He was also very hungry (not a surprise) and within 5 minutes of him coming here he demolished a whole sachet of Whiskas Kitten. Being strange to our house I didn't think he would eat it. He's now miaowing his head off for more food

Monday, I have to go to the vet with Poppy (her eye is improving) so I'll see if I can get Keno in for his kitten check and registration with our vet at the same time.

At least I know our vet will put him right in no time at all. It may be that they will wait until he is 6 months old and do the umbilical hernia the same time as neutering him or they may think it is too big (it feels fully 1 inch in diameter) and repair the hernia in the next week or two - I would think they'll want him to gain a little weight before operating but will probably check him periodically. I know what to look for if the hernia becomes strangulated so I'm keeping a very close eye on it.

I really could thump my neighbour at times. She just hasn't got a clue. She is keeping one of the kittens and I know she won't look after her properly and she will breed her. None of her cats are neutered or spayed so they will inbreed with each other unless it is stopped. At least little Keno will be looked after properly. I really wish I had the space to take his siblings too.

Now, for Keno himself - and I promise photographs will be soon although they'll be taken with my mobile phone as I can't find the charging lead for my camera and the batteries are flat.

He is almost all black now apart from a couple of beige patches here and there on him. Unusually, he has very thin stripes on the top of his head but instead of going vertically from nose to tail, they go from ear to ear! It actually looks like his fur is crimped when the light catches it

He has very long legs and HUGE ears. He has quite a wedge-shaped head, massive eyes that have just a hint of a squint to them. I have no doubt there is Siamese in there somewhere - and he's also VERY talkative. He will sit and speak to you. He hasn't found his purr yet but that's to be expected. Everything is so strange to him at the moment.

He must be finding our house very strange - no noisy kids running around and pulling at him.

It'll take him time to settle in - one thing that does worry me is he seems to be very nervous of our dogs and the neighbour has a dog too - an over exuberant Staffie. Our GSDs are a lot quieter, especially Buddy who likes cats and is very gentle with them.

I'm sure Keno will gain confidence soon and I'll soon have him 100% healthy too

PS. Sorry for not being on lately. I had a bit of an accident and I'm wearing a splint on my hand a the moment. The hospital think I may have fractured the scaphoid bone in my wrist but as it doesn't show up until a couple of weeks after, I have to go back on Tuesday to have it x-rayed again. I'm hoping it isn't fractured as I would then be put into a cast for anything up to 3 months.

In the meantime, I'm having to be quite careful with it but at least it isn't painful now.

And here he is watching my son's hand with great interest. Apologies for the poor quality - I had to use my mobile phone.

Think there's a hint of Siamese in there somewhere. What do you think?

He's a real cuties -but discovered tonight he's not litter trained (again, no surprise there
)

Couldn't resist putting on this pic of Poppy trying to play with Bobby the Python..."Hmm, you are warm, furry and taste good with ketchup"

Poppy's gone up to Keno a few times tonight and hissed at him. He's gone to sleep and Poppy's gone off sulking.

Oh hun he is ADORABLE! The poor thing is so lucky to have you... Your neighbour should NOT have animals, and it breaks my heart knowing that she will most likely never change and it is the kitties who will suffer.

A
for you and healing vibes too!

Keno is much more settled today - I think the fleas are all dead now. He's lying beside my husband at the moment sleeping. His fur is not twitching now so he must be feeling more comfortable.

Fleas 0 - Me 1000

Deal with the worms next. I decided not to buy Panacur from Pets at Home as I am unsure of the doseage and want Keno weighed properly first. Our vet will be able to tell me the correct doseage and I can get the Panacur from them. It's a little bit more expensive but I'm not worried about that.

I bought Keno some balls to play with today. He didn't know what they were for but he will soon learn.

At least he's not running and hiding from the dogs today. Buddy (the gentle one) saw Keno on the sofa, went up to him and just laid his head on the sofa infront of Keno and gave him his soppy look. Keno didn't quite know what to make of it. Max (who can chase cats so I keep a close watch on him) went up and sniffed at Keno then walked away. Suffice to say, Max got praised for being good and gentle.

Poppy is still sulking but she'll come round in time.

I agree the neighbour should not be allowed to keep animals. Trouble is, she's been "advised" time and time again by the RSPCA not to keep animals but she's never been banned. If I called them in, they would give her Frontline for the cats and the dog but she wouldn't use it. She didn't use it the last time she was reported (and it wasn't me who reported her).

I already have one of her cats she got two years ago. She lost interest in him very quickly because she told people in our street that she was going to breed her cats - and they were brother and sister
Someone reported her and the RSPCA paid to get both cats spayed and neutered. The result was, she lost interest in the poor cats, locked them out of the house, didn't feed them and one moved in with us and the other disappeared.

Sparky's a lovely cat now
They never ask about him any more which to me is a good thing.

I heard Keno purr for the first time today

I wondered what the scoop was with Keno...when you were going to get him, if ever! Glad to hear he's in your possession now. Can't wait to hear how he progresses
He's very cute, by the way!

Hope your hand heals soon, and doesn't require a cast for several months. I'm just amazed you were able to type such a long post with it in the condition it's in!

for that hand to hun

There are two things that really annoy me. One is fleas, the other worms. Both are easily preventable and cheap to treat. No need for them whatsoever, especially from a family who are earning a lot more than we are

I have a multi-fuel burning stove in my living room (VERY cosy in winter) so the fleas we picked off poor Keno's little face and put on a piece of kitchen roll were ceremoniously put into the stove and set alight. There was something very satisfying watching the kitchen towel with the dead fleas going up in flames

Keno came to life and was having great fun playing with the ball. He's tired himself out now.

We've discovered he doesn't like being left on his own though. We went into the kitchen leaving Keno in the living room (dogs were in the garden) and he was howling his head off.

I can see him migrating to our bedroom at night...shhh. Don't tell hubby

MrsGreenJeans. My wrist's not painful (typical of a scaphoid injury) and my fingers are free. It's in a splint which makes it a bit awkward but my fingers are free so I can still type fast.

I've found the lead for my camera so I'll get some really good pics over the next day or two and put them on

He reminds me on my lovely Spook (RIP) at the same age except Spook was pure black. Keno has some very faint tabby markings.

Keno's got a loud voice and he talks to you. He hasn't purred much - yet but we have heard him. I'm sure he'll be purring like an engine in a few days. He's been sitting very close to our German Shepherd, Buddy. I'll give him a couple of days and he'll be curled up with Buddy. Buddy is very gentle with other animals. Keno is (understandably) very wary of Max our cross GSD/Belgium Shepherd who doesn't get on so well with cats. We make sure Max is supervised at all times round cats.
