Together, for now

Currently, our three kitties all get to play together, almost all the time. At night, they are in separate rooms as Lucy is technically (for now) my roommate's cat. I left the three cats with him to watch for three days, and I came home to find that they had no food or water available, so I am planning on taking Lucy with me when we move- only that is 2 years or so from now. I am really hoping that he will either change, and take care of her properly, or she will be coming with me.
I was thinking about this the other day, and now I am worried. These cats have been together- and never apart, since the day they were born. If the boys are separated from Lucy in a couple years, is this going to cause problems for them? Is there anything I can do in advance to prevent this from happening? I am really worried now that if she stays with him, that being on her own at that point, that she will be depressed and unhappy. Am I just being silly, or is this possible?

i don't know the answer but is this roommate new to cats? i knew someone with 2 cats (an adult orange kitty and his birth-mom-cat) and whenever i visited his apartment, 95% of the time the water bowl was dry as a bone! the mom-cat died of old age (almost 20) so i assume the orange kitty is pretty old now too (probably 19-20? if he's still alive). but seeing those dry bowls always gave me a baddish vibe. although the mom did live kinda long, the son too.
