How to put eye cream in freaked-out cat's injured eye?

Please, any advice would be helpful!

Yesterday, we noticed that Sparkle's right eye was partially shut, we took her to our vet (who wasn't in) so then to the emergency animal hospital.

They had to put her out to remove debris that she somehow got into her eye, and gave us a antibiotic cream to squeeze a thin line along her lower lid.

Problem: Sparkle is FREAKED. We have her isolated in her own room, so she has calmed down some, but we have to wear fully-covered gear (and gloves) to go in there!

Our vet is out until Tuesday, when I've booked an appointment, but we are hoping to give Sparkle the meds ourselves; without trying to put her in a carrier (stresses her even more) and taking her to the emergency ho$pital again.

How the heck do we put cream in a freaked-out cat's injured eye?

p.s. It took us two of us 10 minutes to get her elizabethan collar back on, we wrapped her in a towel and she screamed and screamed and lashed out the entire time, it was very traumatic for everyone! Is there a better way? Maybe an antibiotic shot or something?

There is a long lasting antibiotic shot, I think 2 or 3 weeks.

Will she let you near her when she is calm? If so, make sure your hands are clean and just sit with her and pet her. Have the ointment on a finger. Slowly pet her on the face and around the eyes. Try to rub the ointment in her eye.

I have the tube too but it could poke her it is so pointy and you have more probs. Try the finger.

Believe me, I can sympathize with you. It is so stressfull.

Thank you so much! I put some of the cream on my finger and it went okay! What a great idea, I was afraid to use the tube near her eye. She seems calmer - tail twitching - but calmer.

Thanks again!

Aww, poor thing, no fun.

2 of my foster boys had pretty bad eye infections which thankfully are now starting to clear up, but yeah, they would freak if I would go at their eye with the tube of ointment, so I would just gently wash out their eyes with a warm cloth, put some ointment on my finger and put it into the eye that way. Sending vibes she heals up soon!

I just had Paul hold Attitude and keep her head still and I squeezed in the ointment directly from the tube. Of course the first time she was on eye ointment was when she was around 8- 10 weeks old. She fought like crazy and continued to do so. I can get her by myself now so it has gotten easier. I think she has accepted(and thinks) that getting goop squeezed in your left eye is part of being a cat. The ointment has to be used, an antibiotic alone will not clear up her eye.

Thanks, guys! Sparkle has calmed down A LOT. Poor little sweetie, her eye is much better but the pupil is still dilated.

Wash your hands first. Using your little finger (trim any long fingernail) spread the ointment on your finger. Take your finger and put the ointment ABOVE the eye- as if you were apply kitty eyeliner. Sparkle will blink and the ointment will drop right in.

I highly recommend a new collar out by Trimline. I use it and love it. It is flexible, the cats don't mind if it is on because they can eat and drink and move around. The website is http://www.trimlineinc.com/ I just tested it and did a review for them and I love it. Only one of my cats didn't like it, and quick spray of Feliway changed his mind. I also recommend it for routine care like cleaning ears and clipping nails. EVERY home should have one that has a cat.

Good luck-
