I've heard that, but not just about cats, I've read that having ANY animal companion is good for the health. But I have definitely heard that stroking a cat is good for health. And the soul.

I know for certain that having a cat around to cuddle and play with decreases the symptoms of my depression. It does the same for my mother.

I also know that having a cat around inspires me to be more active. I have a feeling that getting a dog to take on bike rides will get me even more active!

Yaaaaaay for pets. They bring such good things into our lives.

aww thats so sweet! i too have to say that Daphne has played a big roll in my life. Generally, she doesn't like to be held or handled for too too long. But there was a time when she allowed me to hug her tight and use her as a pillow for half an hour and cry on her after me and my parents had a fight. she always seems to know just when i need comfort the most. i think all cats have a way of knowing their owner's emotions. and they're also really good at listening. they do it without trying, and it helps sometimes just to tell my kitty something and not hear anything negative in reply.

Daphney, my Holland is the same way. She's not big on getting picked up and hugged & kissed, but she will let me do it. And she knows when I've had a bad day or if I'm not feeling well. She knows. And I tend to get extra cuddles on those days. You are so right about how they are good at listening.

Holland is the first animal companion I've had since I was a kid, and - though it probably isn't healthy - I think often about what I will do when she isn't around anymore. She's only 2 years old, for pete's sake!! She's just so important to me I guess I feel I have to prepare myself for the fact that the day will come when I don't have her anymore.

i do the same thing with Daphne but she's a lot older - 6, 7 years on march 24 - and it makes me cry thinking about it. she's been the best friend when no one was around, and i'd die without her... and I'll go on like that until i realize she's got a ton of life left and I'm enjoying every minute she's here.

My situation is different thinking about when Attitude isn't here. She young, but she's also FeLV+. The vet wasn't too encouraging at the last visit about her making it much longer. She's only 13 months old.

There was a Sphynx that lived to be 34---he was registered so they knew for sure. There are other cats that were purported to have lived longer but had less proof. Let me see if I can find something.....here it is: http://www.petpublishing.com/catkit/.../grandpa.shtml

you're probably right. i just wrote what the encyclopedia said, and even with editors, books still have mistakes in them.

It would also depend on when the book was written. Could have been before Granpa was so old.

My doctor disputes the claim that a cat lowers your blood pressure. He say's it only lowers it while you're petting the cat.

I think was just mad becasue he spent the night before getting his wife's cat out of a tree. I heard the story from his wife while I was in the waiting room.
