I have joined the Apple/Mac cult! I love my new Mac, though I admit there is a learning curve, but I signed up for One to One which is a year long face to face support.

Anyone else new to Mac here?

I have the 27 inch iMac. Yes, there is quite a learning curve when you have used Windows forever. But the coolest thing about the operating system is it is always named after a cat! The latest OS is Snow Leopard. What a magnificent cat! Somebody at Apple is a sincere cat lover!

I've had my iMac for a couple of years. I love it for surfing and photo editing and that kind of thing but I really hate typing on it. If I'm doing major writing I use my Toshiba laptop. I don't know what it is about the Mac keyboard that throws me off, but I make a boatload of mistakes and they slow me down too much.

Not new though. I've been using a mix of Mac's and Linux PC's for about 8 years. The MBP is a really nice rig, you done good.

$310 sounds awfully cheap, so it has to be weak in some other area. Provide the amazon link.

My other advice is to fix your current computer. If it hasn't had a complete reformat and reinstall of windows in a while that alone could be making it run terribly. When you reinstall use nLite to help slim down windows. (or dump windows completely and go with linux, it would be no more trouble than the learning curve you'd have with a mac) If that doesn't work, troubleshooting the hardware in it could pinpoint the issue.
Always keep a spare pc around even if it's old. Plus, if you just tossed it out or gave it away people could recover the data off the hard drive.

macbooks are running right at $1000 for the cheapest [no extra memory options, etc.] altho you can get a small [about $50] discount if you're an educator or a student.
for an 'inexpensive' mac, look at the macmini. cpu only [no monitor] starts at about $700.
apple's website has a compare feature - you might look at it.
