We moved in Dec. but our yard was trash, so we have planted 2 orange, 1 lemon, 1 lime and 1 avocado, but it may be years before they produce!

Give some away! Great way to meet the neighbors. Also take some to work. There will always be someone who would love a bag of lemons!

You can also use lemons to scrub your heels with to get all the dead skin off. Just cut in half and rub your heel with it, also if you have rough elbows it works for that also.

You can also make potpurri on your stove using the oranges. With some cinnamon and clove it will be awesome smelling for your home. I heard that lemon is good for cleaning also. May want to look into that. You can also use it as you would flowers and decorate your home with bowls of beautiful fruit! Imagine a gorgeous bowl of lemons on your dining table!

I am sure some friends or coworkers may enjoy the bounty as well.
I know I would...what a great bonus from moving! Awesome!

Thanks so much again everyone for your compliments and great lemon ideas! You bet we want to save money, especially after forking over our life savings and then some! Lemon cleaning products shall reign supreme in my household!

The orange-cinnamon-clove simmering potpourri sounds heavenly!

otto- Dried lemon sachets sound great too!! I've gotta try that! I have a small sachet of dried lavender in my car and I just smoosh it every now and then to release some relaxing lavender scent (which I need while in the car in SoCal!)

Dusty's Mom- not sure where in CA you are, but if you need some citrus before your trees are ready, come on over!

3CatsN1Dog- if you can drive here, you're more than welcome to visit and take some lemons with you!

Um... oh I should've multi-quoted, I forget who to respond to now..

We do plan to share our fruit with whoever would like some, my mom is coming to visit in 2 weeks for our Housewarming Party, and she said she will take a bag of lemons back to PA with her.

The house, though it already is becoming hard work and we're not even living there yet!!, just feels like home. We looked at maybe 40-50 houses probably, and some were really nice, but they didn't feel quite right. Even the other 3 we put offers on, now that we have this one, we're glad they didn't work out. This is how much we like the place in general- it has a PINK BATHROOM with PINK tub/toilet/double sink off the master bedroom, and we still bought it! (there is also a main bathroom that isn't pink. whew!
)

I cannot wait til this week is over and we're moved in and can relax in the backyard. We already got a hummingbird feeder to stick on the kitchen window, if I can get pics I will post them! (also pics of Genever enjoying the wildlife I'm sure!)

Haha! Actually only 1 other person has told me that so far!

I bought an electric citrus juicer with a 20% off coupon from Bed Bath & Beyond, and a cheap pitcher, and I plan to make my first batch on Friday, to be able to offer to our friends helping us move on Saturday!

I'd make my lemonade with no sugar and a healthy dose of salt. My friends would be surprised.

I'm late to this, but a couple of quick ideas:

1. Whenever you slice other kinds of fruit (like apples for pie, or bananas for a fruit plate), you can squirt a little lemon juice on the slices to keep them from turning brown. And the addition of lemon gives apple pie a wonderful zip!

2. You've probably seen oranges neatly studded with cloves in complex patterns and hung with ribbon at Christmastime -- same thing can be done with lemons for a lighter scent.

3. Whenever you use a lemon, run the peel through the garbage disposer to clean and freshen it.

4. You could arrange sliced lemons in a beautiful, decorative bottle of white wine vinegar as a gift at Christmastime... maybe even add some garlic and some peppercorns.

What a joy it will be for you, to have an orchard all your own! :-)

I bet they would!!
I made my first batch today, and I think it's pretty good, though I only tasted a spoonful of it and that was before it was cilled. I think I will add less sugar next time. But it did help to dissolve the sugar in some water to make a simple syrup first. Using the juicer wasd fun too, I'm glad I bought an electric one, so easy!!!

CarolPetunia- You're not late! I can always use more ideas! I love the vinegar bottle idea, and the clove lemons/oranges. I've never seen that before actually. So that's kind of like a natural air freshener?

Big moving day tomorrow!!

Yummy!! You could make lemonade and put some in ice cube trays then freeze them.. and you would have a nice frozen treat.

I remember making sachets in Camp Fire Girls, out of oranges, lemons and apples. We would use small fruits, and stud them with whole cloves, and wrap them in tulle and ribbon. The cloves would dessicate the fruit, and they would smell great, and last forever. They were Christmas gifts that year. I think my Mom still has hers (after nearly 40 years...I don't think it has much scent left, lol!)

Over the river and through the woods...
Beautiful yard! Congrats on the house. I am SO jealous! The only time I've seen a lemon tree is on Farmville
.

I really don't have many idea on uses for lemons. I know lemon juice is about the only thing that will get the smell of onions off your hands, and mom used to put some in the rinse cycle when she washed whites. My grandma always said if you've got lemons and vinegar you can clean anything.

One thing you may want to think about is making fruit baskets and selling them. Especially around the holidays. Go to Goodwill or yard sales and get some baskets for cheap and maybe get some ribbon and other little things, and sell homegrown fruit baskets on ebay or something. Just an idea (the mercenary side of me is coming out! hehe).

Well we moved in on Saturday, and after the truck was unloaded, our friends and BF and I drank the pitcher of lemonade I made on Friday. Yum! Since then I have made another pitcher, just finished it today and so made another one. This time I tried it with Splenda instead of sugar (i like to save my liquid calories for beer
) and I think I used too much even though I looked on Splenda's website for conversion rates. So after I have a glass of the new stuff I will just add more lemon juice and water. I get 1 cup of juice from 3 lemons. Nice!

I've never actually had a lemon drop, I should try it sometime! I do have some jars with cherries soaking in vodka, I bet some of those would go well with the lemonade!

Be prepared in a few months to see a thread titled "Oranges!!"

Also, does anyone know how to tell if an apple is ripe? We have one that looks 'apple-sized' but how do we know when to pick it? I think BF is going to pick it soon, he is too curious and impatient.
Hope it's good!

I love your yard and I love lemons and lemon anything. I love lemon bread, It's even better than banana bread. I also love chicken francais. I can't wait to see pictures of the hummingbirds. I saw my 1st one in person about 2 weeks ago at a friends house on a lake in CT. I feed birds but never saw one of them in my yard. Congrats to you.
