hi there, this is my first post, so hello to all ! i joined as i am looking for some help/information regarding my cat. he is almost 5 and black and white shorthair. i noticed maybe 5 days ago that his coat wasnt looking too good and when i went to clap him a lot was matted together, in small patches although i hadnt felt anything the night before. i though with this heat he just hasnt been grooming himself aswell and shedding extra so over a few days i got all the clumps of hair away by combing him. there was a lot of hair coming away and his dandruff is awful(he normally has a wee bit due to lying in the sun). he has been quieter the last day or so aswell but when he didnt eat his dinner last night i knew something was wrong! i phoned the vets this morning for an app and she had a good feel and checked his temp which was fine. she couldnt find/see anything physically wrong with him except the excess shedding but gave him an steroid and anti-inflam inj so help boost his appetite and for any pain, and if he hasnt perked up hes to go in for a blood test on wed. he does seem slightly brighter and has had a wee bit of sardines (i got the one in sunflower oil to help with his coat aswell). does anybody know of anything that could be wrong with him? thanks for any help!

Welcome to TCS. I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions for you, just a lot of questions.

What is your cat's name? Is he an indoor cat or outdoor cat? What do you feed him? Have you made any changes recently? Are the shots helping any? Can you post pictures? We love kitty

If your vet has ruled out things like allergies and ringworm, you might consider trying a food that has a higher fat content.

Where in Scotland are you located?

Welcome to TCS! Yes we love pics!!

It could be the heat, my guys are very lazy lately. But it's a good thing you got right on it. We have a sense with our animals that other people cannot understand. We just "know" when something is a miss.

How is his water intake? Have you ever considered an automatic water dish. It is good for cats to drink lots of water. Especially if they are fed dry food.

Please keep us informed. If you need blood drawn, it will be much clearer and hopefully it will not be anything but heat and maybe a diet change.

hi there thanks for your replies. his name is mondo and he is a house cat, he occasionally goes into the garden if were in and the door is open, but never wanders further. he normally gets fed tinned meat at night and there is always dried food and water available for him. since his vets trip he has perked up slightly, he wasnt too keen on the fish i got for him so today he has had some pouched cat food and cat milk, but not a great deal. i got him some fancy things today . i'm not too sure about how much hes been drinking as i have my mums cat here at the moment aswell but he has been wee-ing in his tray. i will get a pic up soon. i've booked him in for the blood test tomorrow as im not that pleased with his progress and i go back to work on thursday so i wouldnt be able to get him to the vets until monday.

How long has the other cat been visiting and do they know each other? I ask because sometimes the addition of another cat into a household can stress out a resident cat.

hi there, they have know each other since i got him at 5 months old. she is here for about 3 months a year, she doesnt particuarly like him but they dont fight and she is out most of the day, eats, sleeps and goes out again. he has no obvious wounds and he has been checked over by myself and the vet, the worst she's done in the past is scratched his nose when it got too close to her bum

Even if there are no outward fights, she could be causing Mondo to stress out. Did his problems start shortly after she arrived?

Just a thought.....

Yes, I thought so too. But then again I am biased. All cats are adorable! Mondo looks like such a sweetie.

sorry i am late replying. i am in tears writing this. mondo had kidney failure he is in a critical condition and is receiving agressive treatment at the vets and one of them has taken him home tonight. he seems to be responding ok but he has a slim chance of recovering. i will let you know how he is when i hear in the morning. its not fair he is too young he should have plenty of years left infront of him to laze about as an old man cat

I'm so sorry to hear this. It's good that you have such a caring vet.
Sending that Mondo will get better and be able to come home to you.

Oh No, I am so sorry to hear this.... such a young boy.

I will send up prayers that he responds to treatment. You were so smart to get him right in. You have a wonderful vet.
