New cat causes existing cat to use carpet as litter box.

I have 2 cats, Copper (male, 7) and Silver (female, 7). My wife brought her cat, Sam (male, 1 1/2) when she moved in a few months ago. Over the past few weeks, Copper has been going to the bathroom on the living room carpet (#1 and #2). The litter box is cleaned about 3 times daily. Any ideas of why he's doing this, an how to get him back to the litter box? Thanks!

Chris,

You need another box- even two more would be ideal. Make sure they aren't close to each other either to avoid litter pan ambush

With 3 cats, you really should have 4 litterboxes to prevent problems. Some cats just don't like to share.

3 cats need multiple litter boxes, and did the family do a proper slow introduction?

Three cats should have 4 litter boxes to be safe, or at least 3.
You can fill them up with Cat Attract Litter to get him back using the box, and make sure to clean the spots with an enzyme cleaner.
I would also take him to the vet to rule out an UTI.

Have you taken your cat to the vet to rule out any medical problems such as urinary tract infection? If not, start there. Stress and change in the environment (ex: new people in home, new animals) can bring on things such as UTIs and upper respiratory infections. Rule out anything medical, then work on reducing stress. Do you have any Feliway diffusers? If not, get some and see if that helps reduce the stress.

i agree with all but would also keep them separate till given a clean bill of health and at this time try to work out any possible stress issues as well.....
