Last month when I was on vacation I had a friend staying at my house to take care of my furkids. The day before I got home he had a bit of a panic. He'd gone out for breakfast and when he came back to the house he saw Goldy out in the front yard. He chased her around for 15-20 minutes and never got close to her. When she ran across the street and behind the neighbor's house he finally gave up, wondering how in the world he was going to tell me he'd lost one of my kitties. Then he went around to go in the back door and found Goldy sleeping on the enclosed patio!

I figured my friend had seen the cat that belongs to the neighbors behind me. He seems to be an outdoor only cat and spends a lot of time in my yard chatting with my girls through the screen. He's a red tabby, slightly lighter than Goldy with some white on his chest and paws. He's also bigger and fluffier than her, but I could understand my friend making a mistake when he couldn't get near the cat.

Anyway, a couple of days ago I was doing some yard work out back. When I walked around the house and saw Goldy sitting on the front walk by the door I just about had a heart attack.
It only took about 3 seconds for me to realize it wasn't Goldy, but it definitely wasn't the neighbor's cat either. This one really could be Goldy's twin. It's almost exactly the same size, maybe slightly more solid through the middle, with the same length fur. It's also the same color with the same markings with no white. I couldn't get close enough to see if it was a boy or a girl.

I hadn't seen that cat before and don't have any idea where it came from. I've been told that there is a feral colony just a few blocks from my house but I've never seen any in the immediate area.

Haha! I know a family who had a tortie named Gizmo. One day someone saw a tortie outside and said "What are you doing out here? Get inside, Gizzy!" . And the cat ran inside. But it wasn't Gizzy. They kept her. She really looked just exactly like Gizmo except she had a white tip on her tail.

I've been wondering if I should try to trap this cat if I see it again. The only thing is, I'm not sure what I would do with it if I caught it.

If it's friendly you could keep it, or foster it until you can rehome it.
If it's pretty feral, trap, neuter and release? Good luck!

I had an incident like that a year or so ago, except for me I really should have known better. I live on the 10th floor of an apartment building, so the chances of Genever getting out and then making it across super-busy Ocean Blvd. and then a few blocks further are basically zero. But one night, BF and 2 of our friends who live bearby were walking home from a local bar a few blocks away, and there was this grey cat! With a few tiny spots of white hairs near its neck, just like Genever! And it was friendly like Genever! It seemed a bit skinnier though, but I was freaking out a bit, saying Oh my god, what if she somehow sneaked out before we closed the door and we didnt see her and she somehow got out o the building? Is this her? Should we take it home to make sure? If we don't take it and Genever's not home, what'll we do then? (and no, I was not drunk
- we had dinner and split a pitcher- it was a worknight) BF tried to assure me it couldn't be G-cat, but he sounded like he was wondering a little bit too.. haha.

Anyway, sure enough, when we got home, Genever was right at the door to greet us. BIG SIGH of relief!

When we move, I wonder if there will be wandering cats in the neighborhood.. haven't seen any there yet..

My brother had a strange similar situation about 10 years ago.

He and his wife were driving when near to their home they saw a cat lying dead at the side of the road.

My sister in law was sure that it was her cat and was very upset. My brother was sure that it was not her cat. He tried his best to console her and convince her that she was wrong.

They argued until he gave in and went back to pick up the cat. He picked up the poor unfortunate cat, put it in the trunk of the car and drove home.

When he got home he was greeted in the driveway by sister in law's cat. It turns out that my brother was right.

Now they had an argument about what to do with the poor cat. He couldn't just put it back on the side of the road. Nor could he go door to door with the body looking for the owner.

In the end he gave the cat from the road a proper burial.
