I use Splenda in my coffee.

When it is fresh-brewed, I put the Splenda in, it just dissolves.

But when it gets cold and I reheat some of it in the microwave, the Slenda froths and leaves some foam on the top.

What's the difference?

And do I have too much time on my hands?

LOL

I don't know if you have too much time on your hands, but I do know that the same thing happens when I make tea. Freshly brewed tea and the Splenda dissolves. Tea reheated in the microwave and the Splenda foams. I don't understand why, but it does.

Yikes. I can't eat that stuff; tastes like chemicals and immediately makes my throat sore.

Yeah, but the reheated coffee is actually cooler than the coffee from the brewer.

Next guess?

When I make instant decaf coffee I boil the water in a kettle. On the rare occasion I put a little Splenda into the cup. The Splenda always foams up.

Here's the next mystery - why does morning coffee sometimes feel 'defective' like some miscreant sneaked in and changed out the real coffee beans for decaf? Same coffee, same amount of both water and coffee, brewed the same, they look, smell and taste the same, so why is one pot defective??LOL

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
LOL couldnt tell ya. We recently replaced our coffee maker with a new 12 cup Kenmore....I love the darn thing for its features especially since the clock doesnt stay lit up all the time, but the light on the button for the auto brew is bright so I know that I turned it on. BUT I HATE that the little steam hole thinger is in the WORST spot. You cant fill it up to 12 cups so we can only make 10 a day or the thingie over flows. I love how hot it is and how hot it stays but even filled to 12 and you manage to not spill it is soooo hot that it still never makes a full 12 cups. Thankfully we dont need the full 12 cups anymore since BF is working but still come on Kenmore get with the program....If you can live with just a 10cup pot of coffee get it cuz the carafe is AWESOME it doesnt spill at all no matter how fast you pour..haha

Thats my big coffee mystery...I hate looking up machines because we replace ours yearly cuz they die. Between reviews of people complaining about stupid things to the ones that just sound so outrageous it makes me wonder if its worth reading them anymore.

I think the first thing I would be concerned about is what kind of chemicals are in the Splenda. But I tend not to ingest anything that isn't natural. I don't even eat most brands of ice cream because the ingredients read like a chemical lab analysis report rather than cream, eggs and flavouring which IMO is what ice cream is supposed to contain.

Does that usually happen in the mornings after a long night? LOL! Hey, you are in Western Canada, too, if you are near here we should have a meet-up.

Nope, has nothing to do with long nights, just know they sell defective coffee!!!

Long ways from BC - am in Saskatchewan and rarely travel now, spent my whole life on the road.

Perhaps, but maybe I didn't make myself clear. I added the Splenda after brewing the coffee, and I added the Splenda after reheating some in the microwave, so a hot spot wouldn't be significant.

I couldn't have said it better myself! Artificial sweetners make me incredably ill; I don't use them. I prefer real/natural foods in healthy moderation vs. artificial gunk.

When will people realize that real sugar is better for them?! Just like real butter is better for us than margarine

The only time I use Splenda is in my tea. That's it.

However, I will not be caught without butter in my refrigerator. We use it in moderation. My baking is done with butter, not margarine. I can't stand the stuff.

Real sugar isn't good for you. At least, not in the quantities most Americans eat it. Just as an example, a 16-oz Coke has 16 teaspoons of sugar in it.

Splenda is made from sugar, and so far has not been found to have any bad effects on most people. Like any substance, there are a certain number of people who are sensitive to it, and shouldn't eat it. But it's actually made from processed sugar. The amount you would get in a few cups of coffe is about 1/1000 of the amount that is considered the maximum no-effect dose per day.

The US was one of the last countries to approve Splenda. It had actually been in use around the world for almost 30 years when it was first approved here. Contrary to what many may think, our FDA is very conservative when it comes to approving new additives and drugs. An excellent example is thalidomide, which was NEVER approved in the US (except, I believe, just recently as a treatment for leprosy).

I, too, prefer butter over margerine, but mainly as a matter of taste (although some margerines have a very high concentration of trans fats).
