We're moving!

Yes, BF and I finally bought a house and it's finally ours! We've been packing bit by bit, and the past few days we've brought some boxes of books and things like that to the new house. We want to get small stuff out of the way before the big moving day on July 31. On that day, she'ss be at her Uncle Scott's house so she doesn't get lost or squished in the process. (He'll be helping us move, so she'll be on her own during the day. We'll probably bring her over the night before. She's been there before and seems very at home there. Almost like she's sad when we take her back!!)

The past few weeks, Genever has been spening more time under the bed than usual, I think she can sense our stress levels as well as change.. she is usually not bothered about anything really, she is so easy-going and laid-back, but I can tell she knows something's up. Other than spending time under the bed, she's pretty normal- eating/drinking fine, peeing/pooping fine, playing in the evening, and she lies just under the edge of the bed so when we walk by she grabs our feet/legs under the blanket edge, one of her fave games. So I don't think this is a major alarm-bell behavior change, she's just not totally comfortable with everything that's going on right now.

So on to my question: I bought some Feliway refills a month or 2 back, planning to use them in the new house, but should I maybe plug one in the apartment bedroom now, since she's hanging out there more?

And if you have any other suggestions for a smooth transition, feel free to post them. Thanks!

Congratulations on the new home. I had a similar problem and asked for advice here when we moved but things just seemed to go fantastically on their own and our kitties love the new house. The feliway is a good idea though and I am sure once you have settled into your new home she will too.Good luck.xx

Thanks! I have no doubt she will settle in ok at the new house, but I will use feliway there just to help out a bit. I plugged it in the bedroom just before, and sure enough- she decides she will lie in the sun in the living room with me now. Go figure.

I just want her to not be too stressed while BF and I *are* too stressed packing and planning and whatnot.

Cograts on the house.
I will be in Arcadia for a show August 15th.

I am going to be monitoring this thread like a buzzard. Hubby and I will be moving within the next few months as well, sense he was just given medical retirement today. The Army decided that his asthma was too severe for him to continue service, so now we have to move back to our home state (about 7 hours from here) and figure out not only where to go, but how to get all of our stuff AND 4 cats there safely.

So yes, TIPS PLEASE! I've made the trip with them before, but not quite as far and only as a visit. I'm not sure how they'll adapt to an actual move. --sigh--

When we moved, we put our girl in one of the rooms in one of those large cages. I draped a sheet over half the cage and left her in there with food, water, litter box, bedding, and toys. That way, she couldn't get out and we could check on her and talk to her. Then, once everything was settled for the night, I opened the cage and let her have that room to herself. The run of the whole house was too overwhelming for her. We didn't know about Feliway at the time, but had I known, we'd have had a diffuser in every room of the house!

I would go ahead and plug one in now because there's no doubt she's picking up on your stress, the changing of her current environment that's already happening, and no telling what kind of memories the packing up is bringing back for her. Continue to love on her and reassure her that everything's going to be okay. Spend time playing with her. You also might want to play some soft music for her.

After you move, do with her what you would do when you bring a new cat into the home. Keep in one room for a couple of days, then let her explore more of the home gradually. Keep those diffusers running until she's firmly settled into the new house.

Thanks for the input. I also just posted in nanner's thread in What's New Pussycat? that I did plug in the Feliway in the bedroom yesterday, and I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but last night and today Genever is acting way more normal, not hanging out under the bed all night and all day long. So I unplugged it since she's not in there anymore, and moved it to the outlet near her food dishes in the living room. I can't imagine it would've calmed her down that quickly, but hey, she seems back to normal for now so if she's happy, I'm happy.

Our move is going to be a short one- only about 5 miles, and like I said we have the luxury of keeping her at our friend's house for the day. I think, since she adapted immediately to his house the 1st time we took her there before a trip, that she will be ok having the run of the new house after we get all our furniture moved in and situated. I will use the Feliway plug-in for sure though, it can't hurt. I got a 3-pack of refills in acticipation of the move and a new kitty addition hopefully in September or October.

I plugged the Feliway back in on Friday and plan to keep it plugged in for the duration (only a week til the big move!!). Genever hasn't been hiding under the bed anymore, but we're doing much more packing and moving boxes each day this week so I'd rather just have the goodness in the air.

I will update next weekend, or more like Monday probably as we won't have internet over the weekend I don't think, and let you know how she's handling the new place. Wish us luck!

Well Genever is now at her Uncle Scott's house, since we're moving tomorrow. She seemed agitated all day today, and definitely agitated in the car, which is unusual for her. But when we got to Scott's, so seemed comfortable. She wandered around a bit, and then perched on top of the sofa to look out the window. I know she's in good hands while we move. And if there's not too much chaos still happening tomorrow night, we'll pick her up and show her her new house!! If the place is still a ridiculous mess, then we're going to leave her til Sunday. Until then, I miss my babygirl! It's so strange to not have her around..

I'll let you know how she does in the new place, but probably not til Tuesday or Wednesday when we get internet set up there.

I hope everything is going well!! Sounds like Uncle Scott is quite a blessing.

Due to my recent circumstances, Holland and I have lived in 4 different places in the past year. I tend to think of her as a scaredy-cat (well, she really is ), but reflecting back on all of our moves, she has really been a super little adapter. The key for me has been letting her explore her new surroundings on her own, giving her lots of space to get used to the new places, and otherwise following her schedule (as far as feeding and playing). I've also made sure she has her own "personal" area in every house, where she feels safe to go and know that nobody can bother her if she doesn't want to be bothered.

I'm sure Genever will do great, I can't wait to hear how the new place is!

OK, we're moved in! Well we still have some unpacking and lots of organising to do, but we are out of the apartment and into the house. Genever went to Scott's on Friday night, and he was one of our moving helpers on Saturday. He said she was good, played, sat on his lap, jumped in bed with him for some snuggles, all that good stuff. We picked her up early evening Saturday, and it was nice to just have to go a few blocks to get her. We brought her home, let her out in the spare room where the litterbox is, and she was great! She went exploring all over straight away, tail up, like she owns the place, as well as jumping on the sofa to be with us, as usual, and she ate well and used the litterbox, and slept in her basket or on our bed most of the night (except when she was running laps), I just couldn't believe how well this cat adapts. She is really something special.

She also loves looking out the back screen doors, watching the bugs and the birds. We're going to wait a few weeks before trying to harness train her and bring her in the yard with us, so that she gets the idea that she must stay in the house. I don't want her running out and escaping for all the usual reasons, plus the fact that coyotes have been seen only a few miles away, if not closer. She has tried to run out the door a few times but I think she is beginning to understand that no means no.

I'm so happy! And so seems G-cat!
