Well, that lady wasn't as bad as I thought she would be. They made it sound like they were talking to a lady who currently had 260 cats. That little kitty with the eye infection made me sad, and that little kitty in the cage with a cough. Good for that lady for getting help.

I disagree with the statistic that 100% of animal hoarders relapse without help though, my grandma had 30+ cats at one point, had to find homes for all but two of them. That was over four years ago and she hasn't relapsed, and she certainly did have professional help. She's a tough lady though. She also kicked her alcohol habit too.

I think the 260 cat lady is going to be featured on Animal Planet this week in their Animal Hoarders series. As are those other snippets they showed.

I think.

On my way to my colonoscopy no less, my sister has me "trapped" in her car and starts lecturing me about how many cats I have and what is going to happen to them and please don't take in anymore... .blah, blah, blah......

I have seven. I am trying to rehome Casper b/c I know he'd be much happier as an "only". I haven't pulled or taken in any cats in over a year. If I am successful, that makes six. If my BF hadn't asked (begged) me to keep two others, that would make four.

It really ticked me off. Cats are not that hard to take care of.

You could theoretically keep dozens of cats if you had the right system. It's just a matter of how much time and energy you are willing to devote to them.

Have you guys seen the southpaws documentary on youtube?

This guy has loads of cats and one of them lived to be the oldest house cat on record.

Clearly he was caring for them properly.

I watched this video as well....... he clearly loved his cats, individually gave them what they needed most important being medical attention, and even states that he would have more IF he had the space, so he knows his limits. Not just the oldest kitty in the world, but 2! Also 12 or even 20 doesn't compare to 256.

The other story, thanks for leaving the link. It was sad, you know in a situation like this cats and dogs are suffering and dying from neglect. This isn't a situation where they are all rescues, but they are unable to properly care for and spay/neuter as well.......It's very sad

Good for you and Kailie and EVERYONE who cares for multiple kitties!!! If they are kept clean and happy and healthy then what's the problem? I think hoarders just get so overwhelmed with their situation. The animals suffer, unless they are rescued and can be rehomed.

You guys are awesome.

DH thinks I'd be a hoarder if it weren't for him, but I know I could never lose sight of my kitties' quality of life. I would know my limit for sure.

Mine as well. I am content at 3 right now. If he wasn't around, I may have 1-2 more than that, but I would never take on more than I could handle myself.

Hoarding is a disease- a mental illness, in the same category as OCD. The hoarders often are deluded, thinking they are the ONLY ones who can take care of the animals, etc. That is why mental health intervention is needed. I am not a hoarder; I am in touch with reality, though I am soft-hearted and if a cat was handed to me in a desperate situation, I would take it in over the short term.

I have had a hand in getting quite a few other kitties OUT of harm's way w/o taking them in myself. That is one of the things that I said to my sister- who was concerned, too, about a post she saw on my FB page, begging someone to save/take in a mom cat and kittens - in KY!!!
