I'd like to share some examples of custom cat furniture I've built for my gang. I really don't have the skills or equipment to do serious woodworking, but my cats seem to appreciate these basic things anyway.

First, we have plenty of cats and that means plenty of litter boxes. MommyCat and I used to share litter scooping duty, but when she was recovering from hip surgery I got the idea to "go vertical". It both saves space and reduces crouching and bending when scooping/changing the upper boxes:

The two levels are 2x5' solid aspen boards mounted with 6 2x4's 28 inches tall. The wall-facing edges have 1' aspen plywood boards as splash guards. The ramp is made from scrap plywood wrapped in carpet remnant and attached with a hinge (this allows us to swing the ramp up for easier access to the box directly underneath.) Since I took this picture, I've wrapped the posts in sisal rope for scratching and lined the platforms with removeable shelf liner.

Next, we've been renovating our back room and had to close the room to the cats for a while. As a grand re-opening present for them, I built a three-level bunk bed for their favorite spot at the patio window, and a smaller version of the litter platform. Here's a few of the cats enjoying it:

The three platforms of the bunk bed are blondewood pieces cut to 3x4' with 2' 2x4 legs. The beds are standard TopPaw's from PetsMart, the blankets and pillows are little things we picked up at Target. The smaller litter box platform is made from leftover 2' x 4' blondewood and additional 2x4's and aspen plywood sheets as splash guards.

This picture is a more complete view of this whole arrangement, with a ramp added between the two:

As before, since these pictures were taken I've added sisal rope to some of the 2x4's, shelf liners and additional splash guards to the litter platform.

I'd welcome any suggestions for improvements, ideas for other pieces, and of course descriptions and/or pictures of any custom pieces others have in their collection.

I love the 3-level bunk bed, they are actually enjoying it

Is that what you call ramp? The one connecting the litter boxes and bed? I think it's too steep, they might slide down

All in all, nice job!

Thank you!

I got the idea for using ramps on the furniture after watching my cats use them on some of the commercial cat trees we have. One of my cats, Beethoven (the black one in the pictures), actually does slide down those ramps on his back! He doesn't do this with the litter platform ramps though, he might be put off by the presence of litter boxes at the top or bottom...

Anyway, our cats either climb up and down the ramps or just leap between levels, whichever suits their mood. So far no one has had any difficulty navigating to any platform level. Our oldest cats will be turning 10 next month, so the time may come when we have to provide shallower ramps or alternate access, but for now everyone is fine.

Thank you, Kailie! I have ideas for other pieces but I'm starting to run out of practical space to implement them. I think the next step will be wall-mounted shelves, tunnels and hutches. I've even considered offering my services to local shelters, to build variations on these designs if they're interested.

WOW...I am VERY impressed and jealous!! Those are amazing. My kitties would absolutely love something like that.

Random question...does that litter work well? We use Tidy Cats, and scoop twice a day but still have an odor and I have read good reviews about the Arm & Hammer litter...

That is great!!! Have you read Bob Walker's book about the way they designed their house? http://www.amazon.com/Cats-House-Bob.../dp/0836221834

I bet some local shelters would be thrilled with your offer - where I got my cats, a young man going for his eagle scout certification helped remodel a local shelter's cat room. The difference it made to the cats, the volunteers and potential adoptors was amazing. How kind of you to consider the offer.

I really like the double-decker litter station. I only have 3 cats (5 boxes) but that is just a phenomenal idea! Currently I have 2 boxes upstairs, side by side, in a closet. Putting them in a vertical arrangement would allow me to store the litter tubs in the closet as well (instead of in the room, outside the closet door.) Thanks for the terrific idea!

Note: Apologies to mods for originally posting this in a less than ideal sub-forum. Still finding my way around after some absence.

Thank you! We used to use Tidy Cat and the cats were happy with it, but as we added cats and litter boxes we knew replacing all of that every week would get overwhelming. My parents used Arm & Hammer for their cats and only had to replace the entire contents of the boxes every month or so. We made the switch around the time we moved into the new home and the cats have been fine with it. Now, in addition to daily scooping of the fifteen boxes (
), we allocate three boxes a week for complete content replacement. I supplement that with some litter freshener about twice a week. The clumping action of the Arm & Hammer helps us get rid of the urine daily, and that was the major culprit in odor issues with Tidy Cat.

Thank you! I've read the Walker book and seen video of their home and subsequent projects. I consider them an inspiration. I might have to check with the nearby shelters and see if they could use a design/construction hand with their habitats.

Thank you! My cats took to this layout right away. The lower levels give them a sense of privacy (an issue with some cats) but still make it easier to maintain for us than an enclosed box. The upper levels are especially easy to scoop and replace as needed. We didn't have nearly as many boxes when MommyCat was recovering from her hip surgery, but I was very motivated to make something she could access more easily.

Great ideas! My husband might not be so thankful on the other hand!

For the ramps, you could always add cross pieces 8"-12" apart so that the kitties have something to use as a "ledge" to grab onto or carpet is also an option.

Thank you all! All of these things were surprisingly easy to build, despite my relative lack of skills and equipment. It was all just lumber, screws, a jigsaw, a drill/driver and a pocketful of dreams!

Stephanie, adding some traction strips to the ramps sounds like a great idea. I had hoped the cats might play on the ramps, as I've seen them do on shorter ramps on our commercial cat trees. So far though, they just use them to get from point A to B, when they bother to use them at all. I may replace the bunk bed to litter platform ramp eventually, and I'll keep the "strips" in mind for the next version.
