does this meow mean anything?

Ive only had one cat in my life and just recently brought in a stray.

My cat of 7 years is not very vocal - the new one is - usually just normal meowing.

However, in the last few weeks a few times hes made that weird noise that my other cat and ferals would ONLY make in a crate/trap. like a Yowl and pretty loudly.

Is he just trying to get my attention? Or is this something else?

thanks

Is the new cat male or female? If it's a female and not spayed, she might be in heat.

I agree, ready to mate, but if he has been neutered longer than 6 weeks ago, then I would suggest you take him in for a vet check to make sure he is not in any pain/sick.

Do you know anything about his life before he came to live with you? (Ok I just read you said a stray)... he could also be missing someone and grieving.
Is he inside only now?
If he has been neutered, though, vet would my first step in evaluating if he was sick/pain or not.

He is neutered. He is a stray that i brought in becuase he was being attacked. Ive had him 4 months now.

He seems in good health otherwise - eats (a lot), plays etc.

I will contact the vet if you think he may be in pain.

PS he now sleeps with me every night .

Where is he when he makes these meows and what is he doing?

Some cats will yowl when bored, when they have a toy, or when they're complaining about something.

I have a bored complainer outside who yowls because I won't let him run free to play with the neighbor cats. I also have one in the house that makes weird yowly noises when eating and will make a muffled yowl when she has a ball in her mouth and wants to play fetch. She also occasionally yowls at me from the other end of the house when she wants attention.

He meows a lot when Im around. Usually he wants to eat... i try not to over feed him though - when he was a stray - he had food all day because i fed 9 other cats as well.

He will make this noise usually when im in one room and him in another. I try not to run to him so that he doesnt make it a habit - so ill take my time and just peek around the corner - the last time he was just sitting in teh middle of the floor doing nothing - so maybe it is boredom...

I have toys for him- should I play with him when he does that - OR would that only train him to do it more if it is a case of boredom.

And he doesnt do it THAT often - maybe 3 or 4 times in the last few months.. but wanted to make sure it isnt a health issue or mental thing since Im used to only hearing this sound when cats are scared and/or pissed.

thanks...

Sounds a lot like what my Prissy girl does when she wants attention. Like strange wings, I have a cat that will pick up a toy or a mouthful of food, then make that awful yowling sound to call the other kitties to her. Then she either shares her food or plays with the toy with the other kitties. She's a character.

I think it's a boredom/I wanna play thing for yours, as well. I always play with Priss if the other cats won't or are outside. The way I see it, if my "squeeker" kitty (who almost always uses silent meows) start yowling that loudly for attention, she's really needing some love. As far as I can tell, it doesn't make her do it more or less often.

Hannah makes this sound when it's quiet in our house and she knows I'm home, but can't find me. I always think of it as the "Where are you?" meow. The first time I heard it, I thought something was really wrong. Now I just call to her and she comes to find me.
