Mojito's story: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...ghlight=mojito

The original idea after the cat show was to renovate the garage so all the cats could hang out and everybody gets to stay put. It seemed that things were going on the right track, but apparently mom had different ideas as described in this thread http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...ghlight=mojito .

I've been having trouble arranging transportation to get the cat to his new owner. When uncle came over tonight, my mom came to me asking what to put on an index card to post at Petsmart (my uncle works there). The problem is I don't trust this area. A lot of people in this area don't take good care of their animals. Also a lot of people let their animals loose, only to get hit by cars.

I told her to let me get back with the lady one more time, but I don't have many options.

Starfish, I have read all the links for Mojito and I understand your struggles. There is a Yahoo group where you can ask for a volunteer transport coordinator to help you set up a transport route for him. You can also post the transport run there and others will crosspost it to other sites where volunteers drive a 'leg' of the trip. Each 'leg' is usually about 1 to 1 1/2 hours one way. The person who has the cat usually does the first 'leg' and the new adopter/foster/rescue group usually does the last 'leg'

How far does Mojito have to travel to his new home?

Sorry, I forgot to post an update about the person who was supposed to get him. I got this message on facebook:

Lianna, you need to try to find him a good home there. Im not sure of anything in my life, including my marriage. I am so sorry. I really would love to have Mojito, but its impossible now. I truly am so sorry. It is not something I planned, I promise. I pray you can forgive me.

So now I'm really screwed.

I already told them I refuse to list on Craigslist because of the stupid people on there trying to find a pet (you should see the stupidity of some of these posts looking for cats - you'd know that they have no business have a pet).

If I post him for adoption elsewhere (on or offline - although I've already attracted a scammer through Petfinder), I want to have an adoption form that I can use to screen out those idiots that have no business owning a cat.

Sorry for the harsh words, but after the comments (including those of late) from people of what they do with their animals as well as seeing how the animals in my neighborhood are treated, I really want to tell them what I think (which wouldn't be very nice).

I know cl.com has its issues-I have seen the posts for ppl wanting 4 week old kittens or rehoming the crf 18 yo cat...but on the flip side there are decent ppl on there at times. I don't think you should rule out that way of advertising if things are kinda desperate that the cat gets placed. who knows maybe a reader will tell their friend/family about this cat online.
I have taken 2 kittens at 4-5 weeks old-lady told me were 6 weeks old uhhuh
and the others I took all got a home food, love, care, fixed/other medical treatment if needed.
I think its more in the screening that determines a good home-and yes you will be getting some off replys...but you may get that anywhere.

Starfish, I do have a form for a home visit, but it's for dogs. I would gladly send it to you in an email and you can modify it. I've never done a home visit for a cat for a rescue group.

One if the first questions you would want to ask:
Have you ever owned a cat or dog before?

If so, you want the name and contact info of the vet for a reference. Be sure to call the vet.

How long did the dog/cat live with you?

What happened to it? Passed over the bridge, ran away, gave away, etc.

Will the kitty be allowed outside? All the time or some times? If so, do they live in the country or the city? Cats that live outdoors generally don't live as long.

Any other cats or dogs in house? If so, how will they socialize this one into the group? Relocating a kitty into a household with other pets and/or kids can be very stressful on kitty. How will they handle that?

If they already have a pet, why do they want another?

Will kitty be allowed free roam of the house/apartment?

What will they do with kitty when they are away on vacation?

Any children? How many and how old? Sometimes when there are no children, and one comes along, they get rid of the pet. So what will they do then?

What if kitty has an accident? How will they handle that?

If you can do a home visit, I will give you things to look for.

thanks I have been trying to find forms online so I can screen them for Mojito's sake. I don't want him to be treated like a disposable thing. That's probably how he ended up in my car in the first place.

Bless you for not giving up on Mojito
How sad for the lady who was originally going to take him - she must be going through such heartache (sounds like her DH might dump her). If only she could be in the position to get Mojito; a special kitty would be a great comfort to her during a difficult time. Sending prayers and vibes that Mojito finds a great home soon!

Oh hun, I know what you mean. People around here are completely heartless and few even care about animals.

I can't belive your mom is doing this again. If I knew anyone who could take him and actually take good care of him, I would tell you. But honestly, I can't think of anyone right now. Hardly any of my family members/friends are too great with animals (not abusive or anything, just $5 food and bare basic care) , and the 2 that are great with animals are overwhelmed with the ones they have.

Didn't you say that The Haven would take him if you donated $100? Tell your mom to pay the $100 since she is the one who made the decision that he has to go.

I actually think Petsmart may work... I have seen people in there buying almost one of everything for their animals, maybe someone caring would adopt him. Google "pet adoption form" to get a good form, some are pre-made. Use that to screen adopters. Put up flyers at the vet.

OH! Go back to Highland, or just call, and tell them about your situation. I was in there one day when a woman brought a stray cat in, they took it and were going to find it a home for her. She had to pay $45 or something like that so the cat could be tested for leukimia and aids. You could leave him with an adoption form, and tell them to call you if someone wants him so you can see if it is a good home. They have found SO many cats homes, their is always cagesin the waiting room with homeless cats.

Just some ideas, I will keep thinking...
