So part of my Secret Santa 2009 present from Danielle was a batch of crochet patterns for cat toys, and since we're in the middle of a heat wave and I wanted to make something not-blanket, I thought it might be fun to make some.

So, here's the Cat squid:

And Freya promptly deciding to kill the Cat Squid.

So after awhile I take it away from her and turn my back for one minute just to see her go running downstairs and this is what I find when I follow:

So the Cat Squid is a big hit, but I'm thinking I just need to cut the string off it and let her go at it.

What a neat toy! Did you stuff it with catnip? Freya seems to approve. I think you need to make her several!

I love the look on her face in the last one. "It's mine and you can't have it!"

Thanks. It does have a tiny bit of catnip in it. Most of the squid is legs, so I didn't have much space to stuff it - mostly it's got a small scrap of quilt batting in it. I'm a bit surprised it was still in one piece this morning. After the beating it was taking last night, I was sure I'd be making her a new one today.

Did you just use regular yarn? I'm thinking of trying my hand at some handmade toys for my new boy.

Yes. It's just regular afghan yarn. I'm thinking of getting some cotton yarn (like you'd use to make dish cloths) and trying that, though. I think it might last longer.

Nope, she's not a cyclops.

She still technically has the eye, it's just smaller than her good one and she has next to no vision in it. She was a stray when we found her and the eye had been badly injured in a fight to the point that it had partially deflated. Fortunately she didn't have any ulcers or such, so she kept the eye, it's just closed or covered by her 3rd eyelid when she plays. It is her blind side, although it certainly doesn't slow her down - it just makes anything she does that requires depth perception a bit interesting.
