Ugh, I'm visiting home and it's been so hot here! I went to an amusement park on Thursday with a couple relatives and a friend and I hadn't been drinking much of anything that morning. I ended up getting really hot and felt dizzy and fainted while in one of the lines.
I'm glad we have central air in the house, I can't imagine having to be at home with no air in this weather.

When we went to bed last night, it was still 103 degrees outside! High was about 117 degrees, I think. 'Course, as you can see, I live in Arizona, where we expect it to be hot. We keep our A/C set at 80 degrees, and when we come inside, that feels very cool to us...so cool, in fact, that sometimes I have to put on a light sweater when the A/C kicks on! But heaven forbid if we have a power failure. We'd be packing the cats up and heading for the nearest hotel, because it would get unbearable inside before too long, especially because without power, then no fans either, which are always on when we're in the room.

123 outside right now, and 93 in the trailer.
As this is the beginning of our monsoon season, its also muggy as H-E -Double Hocky Sticks.
While I really hate humidity, I really wish the deluge would just hurry and get here and cool us about 15-20 degrees.
We have had an excessive heat warning in effect since Thursday and lasting, thus far, through till tomorrow night.

It is so dry here the poor robins can't get worms. My fushias have to be misted at least 10 times a day to prevent them from dying and they are in the shade.

DH went out to weed wack yesterday, and came back in and said "ok, that's it for today" sweat dripping off his nose!

We are not used to this long a heat wave here in the north. Poor kitties just lay on the coolish floor. Although, the floors are starting to warm up too. They have fans as do we. It sounds like the runway at the airport in here!

Grandkids and I took turns yesterday misting eachother with the hose.

I am thinking of sleeping all day and doing housework in the middle of the night!

We are usually so busy outside. We have a little Scotty Trailer from 1961 that we want to refurbish. There is some siding we have to finish.

Oh well there is always September!
In September you can have Indian Summer, being a native New Yorker. We are having a 90 plus heat wave here which wouldn't be bad if I had a/c in my little apt. Going to the pool, though and I have fans and there is no humidity.

People should have listened 15-20 years ago when they said our ozone layer is rapidly depleting...now, all of a sudden, people are wondering what they can do to reduce emissions and carbon footprints and such....where were they back then?

It's true, it is just going to get hotter in the summer and colder in the winter...reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode....

I can't take much more of this heat and humidity. Last year we didn't even bother putting the window air conditioners in on our first floor. This year I have been using them almost every day.

Oh, I remember that episode. Yes, we've only ourselves to blame for this mess we're in. I have to laugh (almost) when I hear people say we've got to do this or that to fix emissions, etc. within the next 20 years, and I think to myself...we don't HAVE 20 years! We've got to fix it NOW

Humidity and I do not get along
In each room in my home I've been using a dehumidifying product called Damp Rid. (pic below)

I've been a major fan of this product for my bathroom for 9 or 10 years when I first heard about it. this year I asked myself Hey why not try it in other rooms? I notice less much less humidity in the bathroom (old news to me) and less humidity and less need for A/C in the other rooms. Dumping out the water is fun too and kind of amazing. Especially when I empty the one from the bedroom. It's like What? A bedroom can have that much moisture?

According to NOAA, this is the hottest June on record. Here's a scary little excerpt:

Additionally, June was the fourth consecutive month of record warmth worldwide. To make matters worse, for the 19th year in a row, June marked a record low in Arctic sea ice.
ETA the link: http://www.huliq.com/3257/hottest-mo...tory-june-2010

Nope. Nothing wrong here. We're not messing up the environment.

My a/c has been running nearly non-stop for weeks.

What?! That was true?
Still there are people like my parents who believe this is all some sort of political publicity stunt . I try not to argue with them about it but it's hard. I tell them if it makes them feel better they can ignore it if they want to.

I hope I can make it until Fall on my job. It is ok in the mornings and when I am actually driving, but it slows down during the hottest part of the day, and we have to find a cab stand to sit on. There is only one that has shade, but no calls come out of there during the week, so once it gets too unbearable to sit in one asphalt parking lot, we move to another so we can run the air for a few minutes. We are not allowed to sit with the cars running and run the air, it will burn up the a/c units. I have a little fan that plugs into the lighter, but it mostly just blows the hot air around. By 3 pm, my brain is fried, but I work till 6. By the time I get home, I fall out on the couch, and sometimes don't get back up until 4 am, when I have to get up and get ready to do it again. I have today and tomorrow off, and it is supposed to rain. We really need it, but the humidity will be worse than usual.

Ugh. More 90+ days here in NYC. I might get some of the "Damp Rid" - where do you get that?

I actually turned my air off yesterday,
and kept the blinds down, and kept the fans on, windows open. I was starting to feel so cooped up with everything shut up, and then would feel so miserable the minute I stepped outside. Actually, after my body got used to it, it wasn't too bad. I slept fine, with just the fans on last night and the windows open.

I remember growing up in Minnesota where it would actually get cool at night. That doesn't happen here in NYC. The buildings trap the heat, so it doesn't feel like a major cool-down at night.

I was thinking about that Twilight Zone episode when we were hitting the 100 degree mark! I even mentioned to someone - "This is like Twilight Zone hot." It's one of my favorite episodes, actually. Creepy.

I can't imagine having an outside job. Yikes.

We just have sheets on our bed, and I don't use them either.

Lake Erie is getting up in temperature...every time the lake has reached 80 degrees, the following winter is mild.

It has "cooled down" to the low to mid 80's this week. It rained yesterday for about a half hour, and after it stopped, the lawn was loaded with robins looking for worms. Poor things.

Fall is my fave time of year. The clear, crisp days. Man, I have so much energy then!

There was something on channel 5 about that - it has a name - City Heat Effect or something like that - As you said, the steel of the buildings traps the heat and I think they mentioned the black asphalt too. I added my own layer to the theory - the body heat of 8 million people!
I've never seen that epi of Twilight Zone, I think - and I've seen plenty. The scariest for me was the evil gremlin on the wing of the airplane (shiver)

You can get the refill of DampRid at WHC, corner of 9th and 52nd. Sadly, they rarely have the individual unit in stock. :\\ Those can be ordered through Home Trends. http://www.shophometrends.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_811025

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
I can stand the heat..Its this wet heat that gets me. As soon as I walk outside I get all sticky and then start sweating and most times as long as its dry I can be outside for hours and not sweat much. This just sucks. We have been keeping our living room AC running non stop because it gets too muggy by the morning and we have to keep it cool inside for our golden retriever. Even the cats have started ignoring their cat room because theres no air flow in there so we got a stand up ocilating fan to push air around in there for them.

Thankfully it rained some so our yard got green again but if it doesnt rain again soon its going to get gross. The only thing I like about the rain though is one it keeps the yard nice and too makes the grass grow so I can mow grass...I LOVE mowing the grass its so fun with my rider mower thinger that our landlord brought over for me to use.

If you're checking out Twilight Zone episodes, it's the one called "Midnight Sun", where the earth has moved off its axis, and the sun is getting closer and closer.

Thanks for the tip of the DampRid!
