We've had our Dyson animal now for a good five years or so. We do love our Dyson. It gets the cat hair and does a great job. After years of spending money on vacuums that don't live up to the hype, we're pleased with one that does.

We've had our Dyson DC25 Animal for a few years now as well, and my long thick hair sheds ALL OVER the house also. We sometimes have to cut it off the vacuum brush at the end of the vacuuming.

We are amazed how much cat hair and my hair and all the dirty stuff it picks up. Was definitely worth the $493 we paid for it!!

I had a Dyson DC-17 for two years and loved it! Unfortunately, we loaned it to a relative and it came back damaged. At the time I couldn't afford to replace it directly, so we bought a Bissel Pet Hair model for about $170. The Bissel does a good job. I can't say it's as good as the Dyson, but neither can I say the Dyson is three times better than the Bissel the same way it's three times the price.

My feedback about this...
I have had a Dyson Animal 17 for 3 years...
one repair was needed but because it had a 5 yr. warranty, the company took care of it immediately.

I would buy a Dyson again ...
they really "suck", but instead of the 17 model, I would probably a lesser model, usually the same vacuum but without unneeded accessories. Depending on the size of your home space the 17 can be somewhat large but it picks up dirt & cat hair like no other vacuum I have used.

You might want to look at a Dyson Ball model as an option for a smaller space..
If you get a refurbished one, get a warranty if you can...
vacuums get a lot of wear.

One of my daughters just bought the one linked below at CostCo in AZ.
Good price and she can return it for life.
If you could find a way to afford that, you would have full protection in case of problems, forever .

If anyone ever deserved to have a great vacuum, it's you Eileen.
Sending major TCS vibes that the perfect vacuum comes into your life ASAP.

Thanks, so much for the link, Lei. That's a great price - not much more than I'd be paying for a refurbished Dyson. Thanks, too, for the vacuum vibes.
I'm a bit of vacuum cleaner fanatic, so am pretty excited about the possibility of actually buying a Dyson. I've wanted one for years!

I really appreciate everyone's comments, both positive and negative. As others have said, peoples' experience are going to vary, but I've received enough positive feedback from you guys and other people I know, that I feel pretty confident going ahead with this.

I was at my other brother's house yesterday and found out they have Dyson too, one of the ball models. They it for two years and love it. My brother said it's the only vacuum they've ever had that can keep up with their pets - two cats and two dogs. He did stress how important it is to keep the filter(s) clean, especially if you have pets.

Anyway, looks like my dream of owning a Dyson may soon come true.

I got the Dyson DC 14 Animal (I think it's the 14, is purple.) Bought it as a refurb on ebay a few years ago and it still has the exact same power it had when I bought it. Just have to keep the filter and the beater-bar clean, easy to maintain and it works fantastically.

I highly recommend the Dyson - you remember my comparison test I posted here on TCS when I bought it?

I only wish that the ball had been out when I bought mine, for now I covet the ball.

I do remember and actually took another look at your thread a few days ago. What you got after using the Dyson is the same kind of stuff it pulled out of my carpet that I'd just vacuumed.

I'd love to have a ball, but even refurbished they're too pricey for me.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
I cant afford a Dyson but I would have pushed to save for one if I thought it was worth it. I spent hours looking up vacuums and Dyson models didnt get that many good ones. I went with a Bissel Pet Hair Eraser and its awesome especially have the 3 cats who shed like crazy and now a golden retriever. I personally love it and at WalMart.com its only $117...if I remember correctly.

Well, guys, after talking to a lot of people, reading many more reviews and trying my brother and SIL's DC25 Ball, I went ahead and ordered a new Dyson online a couple of days ago. Got a pretty decent price, including tax and shipping. Trying their Dyson was pretty much the deciding factor, along with their rave reviews. They've found that with two kids, two long-haired cats and two big dogs, the Dyson has been the only vacuum that's been up to the task of keeping their house clean. I borrowed it last weekend and was thrilled with it's ease of use and suction on the carpet, hardwood floors and tile. Did I spend too much? Probably.
But, I've been wanted a Dyson for years and have been saving for it.

I know everyone has different opinions and has had varying experiences with Dysons and other vacuums, but I'm confident that I made a good decision and can't wait for my new toy (I mean vacuum) to get here!

Ack, you should have done the Dyson test. First, you vacuum using your old vacuum. Then, you use the dyson right after. It is amazing how much stuff it picks up!

Have fun with your new vacuum

Oh, I did, and that was a huge part of the decision too.
I vacuumed last Sat. morning my old vacuum, then later in the day with the Dyson. I was amazed and little grossed out at all the stuff that it pulled out of my carpet that looked clean.

Thanks! I'm way too excited about this.

You've made an excellent decision. We're going on 4 years with our Animal and have 2 medium dogs, one that sheds A LOT, and 3 cats and it does the job! My daughter also has long dark hair and I can't remember the last time I saw some of that on the floor!

ENJOY!!!!

The new addition arrived today!
Couldn't wait to get home from work and vacuum.
Anyway, I'm loving it so far. Really fun and easy to use and it sure sucks - in a good way.

Here's pics of the new addition and what it pulled out of the carpet in my living and dining rooms, which were just vacuumed on Sat. Pretty cool! (yeah, I get excited about weird stuff). If my neighbor had been home I going to call her and offer to come down and sweep her apt. too.

Thanks, Lei. One of my co-workers was making fun of my excitement yesterday and described it as "breathtaking."

Seriously, after extensive (obsessive) research, seemed like the ball was the best option for my living space (large apartment) and combination of carpet and hardwood floors. I thought about getting the animal version but the only difference is the pet hair attachment which I wasn't all that impressed with anyway. The stair/furniture attachment with the all floors model does a great job on it's own.

And that's my mini-vacuum review for the day.

I've been jealous of my brother's Dyson for the past 4 years, so have been saving since then and waiting for the right time. I'm really impressed with it so far.
