Okay, guys, I'm just about ready to take what is for me a huge step - buying a Dyson, specifically a DC 17 Animal. I've actually been thinking about this for a long time, since borrowing my brother's DC 07 model a few years ago. I borrowed it again recently and am pretty convinced I need to just go for it. The stuff his vacuum pulled out of my carpet just two days after I'd swept (with what I thought was a decent vacuum) was disgusting. I know Dysons get mixed reviews, but so do a lot of the other top vacuums, I've researched. All I know is that my brother and SIL love theirs, as do some folks on TCS that have them. I can't afford to buy new, but have some petsitting money that I can put toward a refurbished one.

So, if anybody wants to help convince me to go for it, or try to talk me out of it now's your chance!

We've had our Dyson for 4 1/2 years now, and I have long thick hair which sheds like nothing else. Our neighbours got a Dyson not long after us on our recommendation, and they now live in a large house with 2 messy little boys, and both their and our Dyson's are still going strong!

Every time we vacuum we marvel at how much crud it picks up, and we vacuum pretty regularly! It's really easy to maneuver as well, and easy to empty and clean.

I'm sure there's cheaper vacuums that are adequate, but I think the Dyson is worth the extra money

I have one word DON'T- seriously go with a bagged vacuum cleaner- not one with a filter. My repairman has a sign in his window- "Dyson Sucks- until you turn it on!" It has been in the repairshop more times than it has been on my floor. I finally went with a bag vacuum and haven't looked back.

See, this is why I'm hesitating. This is big decision and big investment, one I'll have to live with.

It's hard, though, when I see glowing reviews like Sarah's and how well it cleaned my apartment. My brother and SIL have had their Dyson for six years, in a house with three kids and a golden retriever who sheds like crazy, and no problems at all.

I've always owned a bagged vacuum cleaner and have no issue with them.

I have a henry or rather a hetty and I love it but no matter how much I vacuum, my black carpet always has bits or fur on it, I am considering buying an upright for upstairs, I like the look of the dyson ball.x

I think it's like any appliance - some of them are just defective no matter how good the brand is. If you buy it new, I would expect it to have some sort of warranty, so that if you have any problems, you can get it sorted.

I know a fair few people with Dyson's, and none of my friends have ever reported problems with theirs. There will be the occasional story here and there of them not working correctly, but I think they are generally a pretty safe purchase.

I love my Dyson ...... I have never used a vacuum that even compares to what the dyson can pick up.

I think I have said this before.... I had an off white throw rug in my living room. I am so convinced with my Dyson, that I was showing someone just how great it is. I took coffee grinds and rubbed them into the rug with my shoe. Then I vacuumed and it took everything. It looked brand new. No coffee residue was left at all.

I do believe that because as cat owners, vacuuming a lot of cat hair, that we need to make sure the filter is clean and on the bottom, the drum that rotates will accumulate cat hair that you will have to be aware of and cut away.

But the difference you see when you vacuum with a Dyson and the actual amount of hair you get, is amazing. My throw rugs actually looked brand new after the first time I used my Dyson.

Go for it.... just make sure you keep the filter clean and the bottom rotating drum and you will be fine!

NO, NO, NO!

Get a Shark Navigator instead. I bought one at Costco $157, and I LOVE it. It has great suction, is light weight, has plenty of tools, gets into tight spaces, comes with replacement washable filters, and SUCKS, REALLY SUCKS! That is a GOOD thing in a vacuum!

Really, I couldn't be happier!

LOVE my Dyson and I will never go back to another vacuum again!

I was very hesitant at first, because of the price. But with employee accommodations, we got the Dyson Slim model at a very good price. The first time I vacuumed I couldn't believe the crud that came up. We've had ours for about 4 years and it's still going strong. We've only had one problem, and that was a little piece came off. But because of the warranty we got it fixed no issues.

I know some people are going to come on and say that another type is rated higher than the Dyson by Consumer Reports, but I highly recommend a Dyson. I wouldn't go with anything else.

agree completely! I was also thinking about getting a Dyson, but read a lot of reviews saying that the navigator would do the same for less than half of the price... Reviews by owners who had tried both... I decided to give it a try- this thing is amazing! It has the same cyclonic technology, like the Dyson, it never loses suction, the same 5 years warranty, and many more attachments. The pet hair brush is awesome! This vacuum really really pulls everything from the carpet- it is awesome to see all the fibers up, and the canister full of hair, over and over again.
There is no way I would spend double on a dyson after using a navigator- no way!

At least go to a store where they can demo both side by side. Bed, Bath & Beyond comes to mind. I think they have both.

One thing I really like about the Shark is that the cleaning head is smaller than usual, so it gets into tighter spaces. My daughter also has a Shark. We both love it!

I've actually thought about the Shark and appreciate you guys sharing opinions. It does get a lot of positive reviews, but a few of the negative ones have me concerned, ie..it's not very sturdy, doesn't pick up well on other flooring besides carpet and terrible customer service. Also, I've noticed that many people who rave about it's performance now have only owned it for a few months or a year, so I'm wondering if they'll feel the same way down the road. Folks I know who love their Dyson have all them at least several years. Also, the reburbished Dyson I'm considering is only about $100 more than the Shark (including tax and shipping). Still a lot of money, but not so much that I'll mind paying more.

Decisions, decisions.

I admit I've not used a Dyson, but I like the Shark because you can turn on/off the rotating carpet brush, and the brush doesn't spin when the machine is in the upright position. I also like that it is lightweight and small. I have carpet and tile floors, and it works just as well on the tile as it does on carpet.

I've never seen a Dyson for under $500. My Shark cost $157+ sales tax at Costco. No wait for shipping. That's a big difference.

I say go for it! My parents have had the animal for years now and love it and they don't have any problems with it! in fact my BIL who is highly allergic cats has no problem going to my parents place if they vacumm first.

I have a small Dyson ball for my apartment...it was pricey but it has been wonderful! Much better then the dirt devil we used to have.

Everyone I know who owns the Dyson loves it. Me, I use the old fashioned Electrolux, but I don't have animals in the house either. You need something with some great suction.

I have a Dyson DC 17 Animal and I've had it for several years now - I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! I would highly recommend it. (I have an Australian Shepehrd and 5 kitties to clean up after- that thing is worth its weight in gold...seriously!). It's just like any other applicance- keep it clean and maintained and it will run well!
It'd definitely recommend one!

I have nagged hubby on several occasions to get a Dyson, we were at Bunnings a big hardware house and saw a Dirt Devil Pet it is upright and very light! It was really cheap compared to the dyson, I said to hubby we can buy it and try it out and if it doesnt suck well enough then we can return it.
I could not believe how much it sucked out of our matts in the Loungeroom, and they were still pretty clean a week later! my old vaccume would have never done that!!!
We have never looked back since!
