Hi all

I know male urinary health and food is something that's talked about frequently on here but when I search for Acana grain free I can't really find the answer I'm looking for.

I've been feeding my 2 cats, both males ages 9 and 2, Nutro Max Chicken for about the past 6 months. After a trial of a few other things, it was the only food I found that 1. I could afford, 2. that my 9 year old didn't get constipated on or gain weight, 3. that my 2 year old didn't have an upset tummy / diarrhea, and 4. that I knew was considered safe for Urinary issues. My cats don't have urinary issues and I would like to prevent them as much as possible. Well, about 6 weeks ago, I moved to a bigger city and found a great little holistic pet food store that sells a food called Nutrisource. The owner hyped it up and when I looked at the ingredients, it seemed a little better than Nutro and was basically the same price, so I switched the cats to it (slowly). Well, since then, Bodhi (my oldest) has been throwing up every so often, which he NEVER did before. Otherwise, he acts normally.

It gets more complicated....
I got a dog about 4 months ago with what I thought was a grain / chicken allergy, so I put him on a trial of Acana Pacifica (grain free, fish based), and he has done MARVELOUSLY on it. So, of course, I am feeling guilty about feeding my DOG grain free but NOT the cats. I was considering changing the cats (very slowly) to Acana Wild Prairie (chicken based) to see how they do on it since they're not doing that great on the Nutrisource.

Is it safe for urinary health?? Should I just forget it and go back to Nutro Max which I know worked for them?

Thanks for ANY input, suggestions, advice, etc!!

I have always found Nutro to work well for Chester. He has been on it over 11 years now. If the Nutro Max worked well you could go back to it. Just mix it like you did when switching off of it.

As far as the throwing up, is it food they are throwing up? Is is not too long after they have eaten or is it yellow frothy bile? If it is the food they could just be eating too quickly, maybe the kibble is smaller and they are gulping it down quicker. This could cause vomiting of the food. If this is the case, feed them, whatever the food, on a flatter surface like a plate and smaller amounts more frequently. If it is yellow bile they could be throwing up due to an empty stomach, which could mean they are hungry. Since you are feeding a different food than before you may need to adjust the amount you are feeding, they may need more of it. I had a dog that used to do the throwing up of the yellow bile if he wasn't fed on a strict schedule.

If the throwing up doesn't get better, even if you switch back to the Nutro, I would recommend checking with your vet to be sure it isn't something more serious.

Good luck!

Time to see a vet.. but most seniors actually need some grain... Multiple vets I have dealt with agree with the add a little grain though even the ones with nutrition degrees cant give a firm reason to why it works... which acana> ? see you were on a chicken based food and switching bases can cause issues...

Safe for UtI? that is a Not exactly... acana is better than many grain frees in that area but not a urinary food
