Ginger is doing great! She's even been playing today!

Her wound is less red and less swollen today. It doesn't seem to be itching or hurting as badly, since she hasn't once scratched at it today. She's put on some weight already, too. She's not all skin and bones today, which is a great relief to Meowmy. She's still being a bit of a velcro kitty, but she's getting a bit better. She's adoring all the special food and attention that she's getting too. She's been walking around today with a little pot belly from being so full! She prefers a liquid diet right now though. I'm not entirely sure what that's about. If I put down broth, she'll lap up every last drop. But if I put down solid food, even canned, she has a few bites and walks away.

She's been acting mostly like a normal cat today. She freaked out on the chirpy bird this morning and was tossing it around the living room, attacking it, chewing on it, and kicking out its guts. I was a little worried about her aggravating her wound, but I figure she'd stop if it was hurting her, right? Although I have to admit, when she grooms herself I want to cringe and make her stop. I can see the wound getting stretched and pulled and folded, and I keep thinking "that's got to hurt, she should stop". But again, won't she stop short of actually injuring herself again? Maybe the stretching is good -- maybe it will keep a rigid tight scar from forming. -shrug- I guess we'll find out.

Cody has taken to calling her "FrankenGinger", because of the stitches in her neck... It's hilarious but terrible all at the same time. It's funnier though, considering she actually comes to him when he calls her FrankenGinger!

A few strange things I've noticed today -- other than the preference for liquid food. She like having her ears rubbed. Most other cats I've had, including Ginger pre-injury, flick their ears or fold them back when you touch them. But Ginger purrs like crazy and leans into it if you rub her outer ears between your thumb and fingers. Her purr has changed too, as well as her meow. It's not a huge difference but it's noticeable. Ginger also doesn't like some of her favorite foods. I put down a bite of a chicken sandwich, which she would have inhaled before, but she sniffed it and walked away. She also walked away from the group meal of moist food last night. She doesn't want outside at all, and she's not hissing and growling at Smudge like she used to before she vanished. She's also insanely jealous of her twin brother Cuddles getting in my lap. That's enough to start a war over! I'm not sure what it means, other than I have a whole new puuuursonality to get used to.

But she laid in the sun this morning, and conquered the chirpy bird, and took her meds in the tuna juice like a pro.

Glad to hear she's getting better so fast. It may be that her throat is sore from having the collar too tight for so long. Liquids are just easier to swallow than solids.

Have you tried making a slurry for her to eat ... liquifying her wet food so she can just lap it up? She does need the calories. You can mix in some of that chicken stock... a couple of my cats PREFER wet this way.

Give her time ... she had a terrible trauma - and I don't just mean the injury. Emotionally, etc. She needsd time to heal all the way round.

That's a nice surprise. I hadn't read the original thread till now because it warned about graphic pics and a dead kitty. I never read Rainbow Bridge posts but this has a great ending. I can handle the pic knowing it's turning out well but that was one brutal wound.

I'm so afraid to leave the furkids with a sitter.

Hooray for Ginger! And hooray for you, too! I know you're so happy with her improved health.

Dave PH: I know a few members are sensitive, and a few more are preggers, so I decided to warn about the graphic nature so no one got sick. I guess that maybe my title should have included "It's ALIVE!" too, considering she's a Frankencat in more ways than one now! It was a brutal wound and I just couldn't believe how well it's looking now.

You know, I have been making more liquidized foods for her to eat, but I never thought about her throat being sore. You're right, between that collar choking her, the dehydration, and the serious non-stop crying from the moment she came in at 6:30ish am until I finally gave her some broth around 10 pm that night, I'm sure her throat is pretty raw. Poor baby.

I honestly think that all things considered, I would use this sitter again. It wasn't her fault that Ginger freaked out because she missed us, and decided to go marauding. The cats all know this sitter and her 3 year old daughter, and she's really great with them, and other than Ginger they were all in excellent health when I got back. I seriously think that if you find a good sitter things can be perfectly alright, as long as no one goes outside without a leash, from now on! (all mine are harness trained) This sitter even called me and let me talk to Prissy, because Prissy was walking circles around the apartment complex crying loudly for me.

The sitter I use is a vet tech. She is VERY good with the cats - only pet sits cats. I trust her to administer meds, and if anything should happen she has my permission to take a cat in for treatment immediately.... She also used to be a cop! LOL! So no pissing her off!!!

You can give her baby food mixed with a bit of water and she will get the nutrients she needs. The liquids are easier on her throat as I suspect her throat got pretty tore up inside during her ordeal. I'm just glad she came home and you found her quick enough to save her. Her regeneration powers are in full gear and again you both got lucky- some cats don't have regeneration power.

Good luck with her-

I know. I got so very very lucky with her. She is still young -- just a little over a year -- and she has an intact immune system. She's up to date on shots, in good health, and has never been overweight, so it's easier for her to move around and she doesn't have any stress on her joints or heart.

Now had this happened to Prissy, there's no guarantee that she'd be bouncing back so well, if at all.

I feel guilty that as some people are losing their furbabies, I've gotten mine back. I just don't know what to say. I'm going to go curl up with my furkids and try not to dream of losing them now. (last nights dreams were awful)

Besides the cop thing, that is my situation too.... Love LOOOOOVE my pet sitter, but she is my vet tech, and I trust her 100%. I pay a pretty penny for it though.........

Yes, I thought Ginger had passed too. I wasn't here when the Ginger-clone was hit, so I never got to see the other body. I only had the sitter's conviction that it was Ginger. I feel bad for the other kitty that was hit, but it wasn't my girl.

We got a little snarky about taking our meds this morning... Hubby put down canned food before he left for work, so I guess she was full. She did finish her meds after being in the bathroom for 15 minutes though. Thanks for the continued Vibes. The stitches come out in 7 more days.
