My DH & I adopted the kitty that CatMom2Wires rescued almost 2 weeks ago. You can read about his rescue here: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=218087 . You can see pics here: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=218127 ; here: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=218296 ;
and finally here: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=218466 .

He's estimated to be approx. 9 weeks old and is so skinny! His appetite is excellent, though! Eventually, he'll eat mainly canned, but since he's so young he's free feeding on dry kibble and we're giving him several servings of canned kitten food (Wellness kitten grain-free and EVO kitten) a day. My question is how much should he be eating at each serving? He's been here since yesterday and he's eaten 2-3oz. cans of wet kitten food. We'll feed him at least 2 more times before bedtime. Just want to make sure we're feeding appropriately so he gains weight gradually and grows into a beautiful cat.

if you were feeding all canned it would be roughly 3oz per lb... so if you feed on 3oz three time s a day to gain ( I am going off him being about 2 lb or should be 2 lbs

Or.... you can just feed him as much as he wants eats... Kittens are pretty safe to feed like that, especially on his case, when he needs to gain weight - you don't want to limit his food. If he is hungry, feed him

Four meals a day for all wet, or free feeding dry and a couple of wet meals a day will keep his tummy happy

He's not 2 lbs yet. IIRC, he's just over a pound or more. We didn't want to feed him too much at a serving, but didn't want to really overfeed him either. He pretty much will eat whatever we put in front of him!

Since your using kitten food for the wet ... most labels say 1 can per 3 lbs per day so you can gage what he needs.. Is he just skinney or small?

He's skinny. I think he's going to be an average size cat when fully grown, he's just had a rough start and is malnourished. I can feel his hip bones and just about every bone in his little body.

Stephanie,

He was being weighed daily at his foster home. He was 1.7pounds a week ago Monday, so he's probably heading toward 2 pounds by now. He was eating 2 cans of FF a day and unlimited dry at the foster's.

Sharky, he IS skinny, but not nearly as skinny as when I dragged him from the car! I'm sure he'll be right as rain in no time!

Hope this helps.

Cally

Dumb ? two cans of reg FF or kitten FF.... the regular is twice the amount of the kitten for a kitten

Regular--the 3 oz cans. He had unlimited access to some kind of high quality kitten kibble as well--the same food the purebred kittens ate at the cattery where he was staying.

Thanks for the info, Cally! He's such a cutie and definitely not lacking in the appetite department! He's getting a little belly.
We'll continue feeding him 4 smaller servings of wet food a day and free feed the dry all day.

I think that sounds perfect. Once he's sprung from the cage and starts running around, he'll convert that belly to lean boycat muscle. He's going to go from cute to magnificent!

Probably for the same reasons kids and husbands don't come with instructions. It's much more educational if you learn from your mistakes!

As a kitten is growing you don't need to feed specific amounts, anything goes.
