Traveling with Cats in hot weather

We just had a show in Madison over the weekend. Because its summer we always are concerned when traveling and eating and what to do with the cat.

Normally we will try to find a really shady spot (hard to do) and put down the windows about an inch. This time around we discovered that you can lock the cat in the car loose and turn on the air conditioning while letting the car run.

Trick is you have to have 2 sets of keys for the car - one to have it running; the other to lock the car from the outside. Worked out great and we could eat our supper/lunch with no worries about Jack in the car - as he was eating his food too.

We never tired that.
We eat in the car with the A/C on.
It was 104 when we came back from Arcadia and I ran into Bravo Farms to buy cheese.

Our shows break over the 3 hottest months of Summer, there are also fans that attach to cat carry boxes I've used them when I had a vet appt. in the Summer

One thing I've done is freeze water bottles then tape (lots of duct tape) them up against the back of the cage. Make sure you secure it extremely well if you try it. Yes it melts but even my cats who hate water curl up against the thing... because its cold. You can also try rope to attach it to the cage...depending on your cage. The point is so that it doesn't move so the kitty can either scoot away from it or curl up next to it. The fans that attach to the cages are also good.

I just don't leave them in the car alone. We eat in the car with the cats so they can have the A/C.

I have a lot of trouble with this since my Maine Coon girl is solid black. She will start panting in the sun even if it is not that hot!
I have been considering buying her one of the cooling coats or vests made for dogs.

I love these great suggestions! Leave it to the pros to have some great ones

Another thing you can do is get an old-fashioned hot water bottle and fill it with ice. Put it in the bottom of the cage where the kitties can lay on it. Of course, this only works for the first part of the trip since the ice will eventually melt. Maybe when you stop for lunch you can get two or three extra cups of ice to refill it.
