Another guilty mom here! I caught my baby's tail in my dresser drawer. She walked up underneath it while it was open and I didn't see her. Then when I closed it, it caught her tail. She now has a permanent knot in her tail where it got pinched.
Otherwise though, it's like it never happened.

I have got all 3 of my kids(2 with fur, one without) with the remote on their heads. I've screwed up with all 3 and hurt them. They forgive you.

Kallie-

I do hope your Azizi is feeling right as rain soon!! My Azizi sends greetings and also hopes he feels better.

I know how horrible that is to do something accidental like that and cause them pain *hugs*

Thank you again all, I don't know what I ever did without this forus, seriously.

Azizi is now home, groggy and wobbly but home. We tried to keep him in our bedroom alone to rest but he was having none of that.
He has a funny looking yellow bandage on his tail which needs to come off tomorrow evening. All of the others have been sniffing him, wondering why he smells funny.
We're just glad he's home and ok, even if he DOES have a stumpy tail.

Aww, poor guy. Glad to see he's home and doing ok! He probably already forgave you, as I'm sure he knows you love him to bits and didn't mean to get his tail.

That's how I'll make my fortune. If I can just design a good cat tail prosthetic and patent it so that de-tailed kitties would have their confidence back.

I fell down the stairs carrying Bobby who had just turned 1 the day before. I held on to him tight and sacrificed my back and tailbone. I went down on my butt, the carpet on the stair slipped out. Patrick did the same thing and saved himself and Bobby who was 18 months went down the stairs. The difference between mom and dad.

When he was 1 week old I had to lightly 'toss' him on the couch after I tripped over his bouncy seat so I didn't fall on him.

He had an 80 lbs Old English sheepdog step on his head when he was 4 months old. Abby was blind, so it wasn't on purpose. I was right there and I just couldn't pick him up in time. I also couldn't grab him fast enough when he was 9 months old climbed up the back of the futon and fell head first onto a hardwood floor. He freaking laughed as I rushed to call the doctor in a panic. They told me to watch him for a head injury but he was fine.

I have also stepped on all of them(except Bobby he knows not to get underfoot.)

I have had to grab the cats on various parts of their bodies to get hold of them. I've got skin, fur, I think I got a tail once. As soon as I could grab them properly I did(and I let the cat I had by the tail go) but when you need to get them sometimes you have to grab what you can. I accidentally put Attitude in a too small harness(I realized that the second I got it clipped.) I've cut a few nails too short.

We have all hurt our kids but the furry ones forgive you quickly, the non furry ones, who talk and are older, do but it takes longer. Babies are like cats they forgive as quick as you can get them to quit crying.

I hope Azizi feels better soon. Don't feel bad, we've all done it.

At 3:30AM I heard a scream, boulted out of the bedroom to find Azizi had torn off his bandage and was bleeding everywhere again. It didn't look like he popped a stitch, he just irritated the wound. So I brought him back into our bedroom with us, told him it's too bad if he didn't like it, he needed to stay away from the other's and rest. There's blood smudges all over our bed now, but the bleeding DID stop and thank goodness he seems fine now. He IS very restless however. He has obviously forgiven me and is incredibly lovey, but he keeps coming to me all frantic as if to say "Mommy, make it better, PLEASE."

You all have been wonderfully supportive, but my heart still hurts.
I'm working from home again today to watch him.

Oh the poor baby
. It's an awkward part that's been dressed

I'm pleased it's stopped now though. Did the vet give him a pain injection?, although hopefully after a couple of days he should feel much better.

Lots of healing coming over, but keep us updated?.

Poor kitty and poor mommy.

The tail is a hard thing to keep protected and it's an awkward place to bandage.

I think Attitude had no problem licking the end of her tail in a Elizabethan collar(she was in it for a corneal ulcer.) I will say that Attitude has a long tail though. She also wasn't in it for a day, she kept putting her foot through the front of it despite the fact that it was as tight as I could make it without strangling her. The vet got a call the next day that I had to remove it before she killed or seriously injured herself(she wasn't even bothering her eye anyways.)

I'd call the vet tell them what is up and see what they say. There might be a way to keep him from re injuring his tail.

I know that had to be scary as heck. I know that scream, it is universal among all animals, it sounds the same way and gets you up and running before you even realize your feet are on the floor. Nothing worse than hearing that scream from your baby, furred or otherwise because you know whatever it is it's very bad because it is reserved for bad pain.

Bobby had 6 teeth come in at once and I thought he was just being cranky until I noticed all 6 teeth coming in(this kid had a full set of teeth including his 2 year molars by the time he was 1 and he never got one at time, they came in in groups) so even 6 teeth at once didn't involve 'the scream.' I'm guilty of that one too, I had yelled at him that he had no reason to be cranky, then I saw his mouth and told him he had a very valid reason for being cranky and gave him some Tylenol.

Is he on pain killers? If not I'd talk to the vet about it since the injury sounds really painful.

Let us know how he's doing. I feel so bad for you both. It's horrible seeing your baby in pain, because there isn't anything you can do beyond giving them painkillers and that doesn't always work. Been there, done that where the pain killers don't even touch it. I know you want to take his pain away and have the pain yourself instead of him, I know I feel that way with all 8 kids(7 with fur and 1 without.) Healing and no pain {{VIBES}} for you both.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier (out of town), but glad to hear he's been all fixed up by the Vet, poor baby.

I know you feel terrible, but we've all done things like step on them accidentally, close them up behind doors and leave them for hours when we didn't know they were there, etc. I'm petrified that I will roll my chair back and roll over one of mine, since they seem to like lying right behind me when I'm at the computer. Sometimes I roll back without thinking, and THEN I think, OMG, what if one of them had been right there!!! Thankfully, the only thing I've done lately is lock Darko in the hall closet for a couple of hours when I pulled my suitcase out of it. I had no idea he had snuck in there. All that did was either scare him, or make him mad...not sure which
.

for a quick recovery and no more blood all over the place. I can't imagine how to keep that bandage on!

Well he's been resting off and on all day, but hasn't really been able to sit still for long. He keeps whiping his tail, which is of course hurting him, and then he bites at it!
Luckily he hasn't reinjured it.

I called the vet and they said it's normal for him to bite at it and be restless for the first few days but they can't give him anything for pain unless I bring him back in and truthfully I don't want to do that unless completely necessary as THAT would be almost more tramatic for him. I don't get why they didn't just perscribe/give him something when we were there yesterday?!? Anyway, there hasn't been anymore bleeding all day, and I'm continuing to keep a close eye on the poor little guy.

Unless he has some other health issues going on, I don't understand why they didn't prescribe him pain control either. And then, why in the world would they need him to come back to give him something? They have all of the info you need to prescribe something (weight, history, etc.). Poor little guy. I can't imagine having something amputated and then not getting any pain meds. I don't know how many nerve endings they have in their tails, but do know how much injuries to tails appear to hurt them.
Hopefully he'll feel better soon.

Oh, my - poor little guy! Sounds like the pain is getting to him, but as you say, a trip to the vet may make him frantic & he'll re-hurt himself. My one vet doesn't give extra pain meds, but the other vet hospital gives long acting shots and pain meds for at home use
Sending mega prayers and vibes that his tail heals quickly

Can you maybe call and ask specifically for torbugesic? It seems to be a gentler pain medicine, and most vets don't have any problems giving it out over the phone as long as they have records of the cat. Maybe try getting your vet to fax your cat's records to another vet?

I know that when Prissy had her tail docked, she would not leave the bandage on, and she didn't even have much feeling in her tail BEFORE the surgery. It's a combination of the pain, and having an unusual weight attached to them. I finally found some cloth athletic tape that worked pretty well. It is the same type of stuff they use to wrap horses legs with, and it sticks to them and itself just enough without sticking to the hair. You may want to try that.

More headed your way.

Poor guy!
I would definitely call back and ask for pain medication.

When Pandora had to have her cysts removed she wouldn't stop messing with the stitches so I had to put a cone on her until the stitches came out. I hated doing it and she hated it too, but eventually she got used to it. You might have to resort to putting a cone on him to keep him from hurting himself.

I hope he heals soon!
