I feel HORRIBLE! - Page 2

Oh the poor baby . It's an awkward part that's been dressed

I'm pleased it's stopped now though. Did the vet give him a pain injection?, although hopefully after a couple of days he should feel much better.

Lots of healing coming over, but keep us updated?.

Poor kitty and poor mommy.

The tail is a hard thing to keep protected and it's an awkward place to bandage.

I think Attitude had no problem licking the end of her tail in a Elizabethan collar(she was in it for a corneal ulcer.) I will say that Attitude has a long tail though. She also wasn't in it for a day, she kept putting her foot through the front of it despite the fact that it was as tight as I could make it without strangling her. The vet got a call the next day that I had to remove it before she killed or seriously injured herself(she wasn't even bothering her eye anyways.)

I'd call the vet tell them what is up and see what they say. There might be a way to keep him from re injuring his tail.

I know that had to be scary as heck. I know that scream, it is universal among all animals, it sounds the same way and gets you up and running before you even realize your feet are on the floor. Nothing worse than hearing that scream from your baby, furred or otherwise because you know whatever it is it's very bad because it is reserved for bad pain.

Bobby had 6 teeth come in at once and I thought he was just being cranky until I noticed all 6 teeth coming in(this kid had a full set of teeth including his 2 year molars by the time he was 1 and he never got one at time, they came in in groups) so even 6 teeth at once didn't involve 'the scream.' I'm guilty of that one too, I had yelled at him that he had no reason to be cranky, then I saw his mouth and told him he had a very valid reason for being cranky and gave him some Tylenol.

Is he on pain killers? If not I'd talk to the vet about it since the injury sounds really painful.

Let us know how he's doing. I feel so bad for you both. It's horrible seeing your baby in pain, because there isn't anything you can do beyond giving them painkillers and that doesn't always work. Been there, done that where the pain killers don't even touch it. I know you want to take his pain away and have the pain yourself instead of him, I know I feel that way with all 8 kids(7 with fur and 1 without.) Healing and no pain {{VIBES}} for you both.

Oh no! Hopefully your baby will heal up quickly and all will be well! A little shorter, perhaps but well!

Sorry I didn't respond earlier (out of town), but glad to hear he's been all fixed up by the Vet, poor baby.

I know you feel terrible, but we've all done things like step on them accidentally, close them up behind doors and leave them for hours when we didn't know they were there, etc. I'm petrified that I will roll my chair back and roll over one of mine, since they seem to like lying right behind me when I'm at the computer. Sometimes I roll back without thinking, and THEN I think, OMG, what if one of them had been right there!!! Thankfully, the only thing I've done lately is lock Darko in the hall closet for a couple of hours when I pulled my suitcase out of it. I had no idea he had snuck in there. All that did was either scare him, or make him mad...not sure which .

for a quick recovery and no more blood all over the place. I can't imagine how to keep that bandage on!

Well he's been resting off and on all day, but hasn't really been able to sit still for long. He keeps whiping his tail, which is of course hurting him, and then he bites at it! Luckily he hasn't reinjured it.

I called the vet and they said it's normal for him to bite at it and be restless for the first few days but they can't give him anything for pain unless I bring him back in and truthfully I don't want to do that unless completely necessary as THAT would be almost more tramatic for him. I don't get why they didn't just perscribe/give him something when we were there yesterday?!? Anyway, there hasn't been anymore bleeding all day, and I'm continuing to keep a close eye on the poor little guy.

Unless he has some other health issues going on, I don't understand why they didn't prescribe him pain control either. And then, why in the world would they need him to come back to give him something? They have all of the info you need to prescribe something (weight, history, etc.). Poor little guy. I can't imagine having something amputated and then not getting any pain meds. I don't know how many nerve endings they have in their tails, but do know how much injuries to tails appear to hurt them. Hopefully he'll feel better soon.

Oh, my - poor little guy! Sounds like the pain is getting to him, but as you say, a trip to the vet may make him frantic & he'll re-hurt himself. My one vet doesn't give extra pain meds, but the other vet hospital gives long acting shots and pain meds for at home use Sending mega prayers and vibes that his tail heals quickly

Can you maybe call and ask specifically for torbugesic? It seems to be a gentler pain medicine, and most vets don't have any problems giving it out over the phone as long as they have records of the cat. Maybe try getting your vet to fax your cat's records to another vet?

I know that when Prissy had her tail docked, she would not leave the bandage on, and she didn't even have much feeling in her tail BEFORE the surgery. It's a combination of the pain, and having an unusual weight attached to them. I finally found some cloth athletic tape that worked pretty well. It is the same type of stuff they use to wrap horses legs with, and it sticks to them and itself just enough without sticking to the hair. You may want to try that.

More headed your way.

Poor guy! I would definitely call back and ask for pain medication.

When Pandora had to have her cysts removed she wouldn't stop messing with the stitches so I had to put a cone on her until the stitches came out. I hated doing it and she hated it too, but eventually she got used to it. You might have to resort to putting a cone on him to keep him from hurting himself.

I hope he heals soon!

I would insist on some painkillers as well. I know cats have a pain tollerance, but still
post #41 of 50
Why would they not give pain medication and then demand you bring him back if you want them? They told me with Nuts if I thought he needed pain meds to just call and they'd prescribe them and I could just pick them up. A trip to the vet is stressful for even the calmest animal. I know when I take Attitude it stresses her since she blows her coat. She is less stressed when on a leash(she sits on my lap unless there aren't any dogs in the waiting room and even then she just sits at my feet if she wants down) than in her carrier but either way it's stressful and she usually isn't injured. They just saw him so it's not like you are calling them weeks later wanting some, I mean it just happened.

It has to hurt, I mean if you had something amputated it would hurt, this why I won't declaw a cat, it's an amputation and it hurts.

I'm sorry they are being difficult, I don't get it either. My vet most of time doesn't give you the option of pain killers, he just gives them if it's something painful, like a spay or other surgery, other than a neuter and even then they tell you that they will give them if you think they need them with a phone call.

Major coming your way. I hope he get better soon.

Zi (which is what we usually call him.) is actually doing MUCH better today. His tail hasn't been bleeding anymore and he doesn't seem nearly as restless. We also weren't woken up by any kitty screams last night.

Thankfully I think the REALLY hard part is over now. Thank you all SO much for the vibes and well wishes. Please keep them coming!

Thanks hun. Another night down and Zi continues to do well. His tail doesn't look bad at all, and although he'll still occasionally get mad at it and try to bite at it, he's not doing any further damage and it looks to be healing. We had to scold Teyah last night though, as she seems to thing Zi's new shorter, naked tail is her new play toy.

That's something Jack would do He did it to Sophie last night when he was sitting beside me on the sofa and Sophie slowly walked past, so her tail was just within easy reach for him to swat at a couple of times

Pleased he's still improving though

I'm glad that he is doing better and that he doesn't seem to be hurting.

I just saw this thread today. I am so glad you kitty is doing better.

I had a friend who had a cat and her son was playing with it. He was about 3 or so. She turned around for a minute and heard screeching from the cat. Apparently her son had pulled the skin and fur off of the cat's tip of the tail. He had to have his amputated as well. They took an inch off. He's fine now, and I think at the time he was like 13 so he was old too and he's fine now. Happy as ever.

I know how badly you feel. Every time I step on one of the cats tails because they are around my feet in the kitchen, I feel so bad. And you'd think after umpteen times of stepping on their tails that they'd get the hint that they shouldn't be around my feet, but they still do it. Drives me crazy.

Accident's happen and as long as you didn't do it intentionally, you shouldn't feel guilty. I know it's easier said than done, but it's the truth. Your furbaby still loves you no matter what.

Zi got his stitches out about an hour ago! He was SO good at the vet and actually purred and kneaded the whole time. Such a sweet, lovey boy... SO glad this whole ordeal is done and over with.
