I don't text. I don't have it included on my cell phone plan so I pay extra for any I get. I have had a few people text me and have had to tell them not to text me as I can't answer them through that method as well as I have to pay extra for the ones they sent me.

I just recently figured out I can block them so I have, but I wonder what you all think about this. Is it okay to text someone whom you don't know if they text seeing that we all know that it is a service that must be paid for?

One was my catsitter who I left a voicemail for and she texted me back. I think that was not a cool thing to do. I didn't text her and I asked her to CALL me back. So I got 5 texts from her that I now have to pay for. Another was my landlord who did the same thing. I called him yet he texted back to me. It just seems rude to me.

It IS rude.

You can go to your carrier and have all texts blocked.

Yes, that was rude. I don't text a lot, but I do have ONE rule: I know the person I'm texting has a text plan so it won't cost them anything. I usually only text if I have a quick thing to tell the person that doesn't warrant a phone call or if I'm at a concert (I'm a music junkie) trying to find a friend because it's usually too loud to hear a phone conversation anyway. I also used to text my sister when she worked the night shift (she's a nurse) so she could call me back when it was convenient for her.

I know all phones and carriers are different, but you should also be able to delete the text without opening it, which you shouldn't have to pay for.

I do text, and the people i text also text. There are a few people who don't have a text plan but they've said they don't care if I text them because it's only me and maybe 1 or 2 other people that they text once in a while, and it wouldn't add up to the amount they'd pay for a plan. So no worries about them. If they told me otherwise, I'd certainly stop. But as of now, those people text me more than I text them anyway, because I'm conscious of the fact that, even though they're cool with it, they have to pay per text.

I have been told by a few people though that they don't text and so they didn't want me to text them, and guess what, I simply don't text them anymore! No more problems. That's all you have to say, 'I don't have a texting plan, so please don't text me because I will not text you back and I also have to pay extra for it.' Then, if they can't follow a simple friendly request and they STILL text you, then yeah, be mad and yell.

Also, if you can get all texts blocked on your plan, then that's the best way for you to go.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that I agree that if you call someone and leave a message, then yes, it is rude for them to just text you back. I wouldn't do that unless the person specifically said in their message 'give me a call or text back...'

People need to learn cell phone etiquette!! It's getting grosser and grosser as the years go by!

I don't have a texting feature. I also can't receive texts because I told them I didn't need or want anything to do with texting.

I've had my phone for almost 2 years and I just turned on call display a few weeks ago, and the other day just found out that I have a voice mail feature that I didn't know I had. My sister-in-law told me that she couldn't leave me a voice mail because the box was full. I called MTS and that's when they told me that I did in fact have voice mail and told me how to access the box. There were 3 messages there from 18 months ago!!!

hahaha! I'm the same way. I have an old tracfone. I think there is a voice mail feature but I have no idea how to access it.

I buy a 365-day card once a year, the minutes roll over. I carry the phone for emergencies only. I've used it probably five times in all the years I've carried it, and probably have a gazillion minutes.

I've used it twice to call the police when I saw dogs left in cars in parking lots. I used it once to call the police when I was driving behind what appeared to be a drunk driver. The truck was all over the road. I made note of the license plate number, pulled over and called 911.

The other two times were when I was meeting my sister for hikes in remote areas and the meeting place was not easily found.

Most people don't even know I have it. The last thing I want to be is at the beck and call of everyone. If you want me, leave a message on my land-line answering machine or send me an e mail.

As for me texting, that will never happen.

People have plans that include texting in the price so they don't think twice about it. If you have specifically asked them not to text and they do that is just rude of them or they are clueless.

I, on the other hand, luv 2 txt 2 my bff.

It's only 10¢ a text, isn't it? Not really worth getting upset about, IMO. Most people text without thinking about it, because they have it included. Just tell them you'd rather not be texted. Once you've asked them not to text you, then it would be rude for them to disregard your wishes. You can have it blocked if you don't want to get any texts.

It doesn't cost anything to receive texts here, most plans include it and pre-paid is very cheap so I would assume that most people with a mobile phone text.

I wouldn't get too upset over it, since it's so common to communicate by text these days it would be easy to forget that someone doesn't text.

My friend told me in a nice way "Don't text because I haveto pay extra for those." Then when he got a plan he said "You can text me now because blahblah..."
My faux pas was in assuming he had a plan. Y'know, not to go O/T but I was one of those people who said Oh I'll never text. But now I think I send about 4-5 texts per week to different people.

It's $.25/text for me, more for picture messages I think? I text a fair amount, so I got it included in my plan.

my old carrier was like the above..I of course now text most of the time as I had some loving friends teach me.. I have a unlimited talk/text /pic plan... As a courtesy if I know someone does not text I avoid texting them unless it is a emergency and cant get them through the phone

I don't have a texting plan at the moment either, but I've had one in the past..I still get some texts but I pay for them individually because the amount I get is not enough to warrant a texting plan and I would be paying less if I pay the $0.20 or so per text...
As far as it being rude, IMO it's not up to me to know what kind of plan the person I'm trying to reach has. If they ask me not to text them, I won't; but I may text if they haven't told me not to and I don't know anything about if they have a texting plan. I would only text if it's something important in the latter situation though.
I prefer texts, sadly I feel like it's easier than calling people and trying not to forget to be polite, ask how they're doing, and then end up with a 20 minute conversation when you only called to say one thing or ask something that requires a one word answer...

When I had a cellphone, I texted alot, BUT I never texted anyone who didn't have the feature on their phone. That is very rude.

I hate texting! I hate getting them and I almost never return the ones I get. If you need to reach me, pick up the phone and TALK! I have had a truck for sale and if I get one more "can u send pics" text, I may snap. It says right in my ad, "Do not text, call me, will not send pics unless you do. You can come look at the truck any time." I am not going to send pics of my truck sitting in front of my house to anyone that asks for them.

I might send one or two messages every couple of months. I don't even like talking on the phone.

I don't text; I just don't see the need for it (yet). We don't have texting included in our plan, so whenever I get one, I simply don't open it. My friends and family know that we don't open them, so they don't send any.

I don't "get" the whole texting thing anyway. Why not just call somebody? What's so difficult about that?
